Do you have thinning hair?

by

While nearly everyone experiences hair loss as they get older, did you know hair loss can actually happen at any age? But it’s not all doom and gloom. With hair thinning, it’s important to recognise the signs and take action early so you can treat and repair the damage before it gets worse.

Here, we talk to Advangen scientist Joseph Haklani about the effects of hair thinning, why it happens, and how to treat it with the help of évolis.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FINE HAIR AND THINNING HAIR?

Fine hair relates to “the diameter or thickness of each individual strand of hair, which can typically range anywhere between 0.04mm and 0.12mm”, says Joseph. Based on this scale, you would “consider hair at the lower end to be fine, and hair at the higher end to be thick”.

On the flipside, hair thinning or hair loss can be “largely defined by a decrease over time in the number of hair per square inch or hair density”. However, there can be a direct link between fine hair and hair thinning. “Often, with thinning, a person’s hair may become fine over time”, and this can affect both men and women.

WHAT ARE THE TELLTALE SIGNS YOUR HAIR IS THINNING?

While there’s no doubt that ageing takes its toll on our hair, it’s quite common to suffer from hair thinning in young adult life, too.

Hair thinning happens when the ‘growth’ or ‘anagen’ phase of the hair growth cycle – which generally lasts between 2-6 years and is responsible for new hair growth – shortens, and the ‘resting’ or ‘telogen’ phase –  a  3-4 month period in which the hair falls out – lengthens.

Joseph says the biggest telltale sign of hair thinning is increased visibility of the scalp over time. For women, thinning may be evident as a widening of the hair parting, and for men, it’s generally a fading hairline around the temples and a visible scalp around the crown of the head. “An early indicator that your hair may be thinning is if you notice an increased shedding of hair in your brush, towel after showering or on your pillow case”, “If you are concerned that your hair might be thinning, it’s important to consult your doctor to determine the cause of your hair loss” says Joseph.

HOW CAN YOU TREAT HAIR THINNING?

As always, early treatment is the best way to promote healthy, constant hair growth, and évolis hair loss treatments are clinically proven to increase follicle growth and reduce thinning. The treatments contain active ingredients, which work to inhibit FGF5 (the protein that’s responsible for causing hair loss) and reduce hair thinning by keeping it in the ‘growing’ phase for longer. This gives any resting hair follicles the time to grow, strengthen and anchor more deeply into the scalp, leading to fuller, thicker, healthier hair.

The évolis hair treatments for men and women also feature botanical extracts (poterium officinale, rosa multiflora and swertia chirata for women, and eriobotrya japonica, ginkgo biloba and swertia chirata for men), which encourage thicker hair.

Lastly, hair thinning can only be treated successfully on functional hair follicles. If the follicles stop producing new hairs altogether, it’s too late to treat the problem, and the follicles cannot be resurrected. If you notice that your hair is thinning, seek medical advice as early as possible.

  1. I experienced both hair fall and the texture of my hair seemed thin with breakage .. i will share the best thing I did was start a supplement.. although not considered postpartum I got recommended a max strength postpartum hair vitamin from a brand called Baby Blues (ok to share?) http://www.babyblues.care … anyway significantly helped with the hair shedding about month two late and my hair texture is shinier and less thin… i will say i have long dark hair so when it was shedding it was so easily noticeable and particularly grossed out my husband so this has been a gamechanger for me.
