The greatest gift of love
You know how when you watched The Notebook and you fell in love with Ryan Gosling, you still sadly thought, ‘Oh, but there’s no way any real-life man would build a house for the woman he loves. That’s just ridiculous’?
You know what? It’s not so ridiculous. Because there is a man out there who loved a woman so much he built her a house. Okay, it was less of a house, and more of a spa. But still. That’s love. And it’s how Sanctuary Spa in London came to be.
US choreographer Gary Cockerill was married to a ballerina. And as all ballerinas do, she worked her butt off and was pretty pooped. Gary, the romantic and giving man he is, decided his wife and her fellow dancers needed a space where they could unwind, relax, and be among friends. So in 1977 he did what any man should: he built a spa for his wife and the other ballerinas that was close to the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden (where they trained and performed) so that they could easily have some ‘me time’.
Today, the spa (known as the spa that was born from love, not a lab) is a sanctuary for all women who need to indulge in a bit of pampering and relaxation. And with amenities like two swimming pools, Jacuzzis, sauna and steam rooms, a highly-regarded restaurant and dozens of treatment rooms, it’s easy to see why the spa has expanded to other areas in the UK.
But what about us all the way over here in Australia? Well, Sanctuary Spa wants all women everywhere to feel happy, indulged and relaxed, which is why it developed the at-home range of products (using the expertise of the spa’s therapists and feedback from the guests). It’s like having the blissed-out experience of the spa in the comfort of your own home. The products range from mud masks, face oils and scrubs to products that help keep skin supple and stretch-mark-free after pregnancy.
Sanctuary Spa knows what your skin needs and knows what works, so it doesn’t get much better than that, does it?
SANCTUARY SPA PRODUCTS WE LOVE
Spa Essentials Hot Sugar Scrub
This body scrub is famous – and for good reason, too. The award-winning treatment contains thermal zeolite, a nifty ingredient that provides a warming sensation as you massage the scrub into your skin. The scrub helps open pores for a deep, yet gentle, cleanse. Plus, kaolin clay helps draw out impurities, leaving skin silky smooth.
Therapists Secret Facial Oil
Facial oils may seem scary to some. Wouldn’t oil just make your skin oilier? Not so. Facial oils are actually brilliant in helping replenish your skin’s natural oil content and will leave your skin more hydrated and rejuvenated with added plumpness. This oil contains a powerful mixture of sunflower, jojoba, wheat germ and rosehip seed oils to ensure all skin types are left soft, supple and radiant. Oh, and did we mention it’s 99 per cent organic?
5 Minute Thermal Detox Mask
Do you have five minutes to spare every now and then? Of course you do. Which means you’ve got just the right amount of time to chill out with this self-heating mask. The warmth of it helps open up your pores so that the charcoal and kaolin clay can do their best to help draw out impurities from deep beneath the surface layer of skin.
