Expert Reviews: bh’s flavours of the week

One of the greatest perks about working in the beauty industry is having to try products in the name of “research”. So, when a dreamy purple lipstick, a deep plum polish, a chic dry shampoo or hair thickening treatment landed our desks, we had to put them to the test right away. See what we thought of this week’s picks!

Avon Ultra Colour Indulgence Lipstick

bh’s Astrid says:

“I have a personal vendetta against lipsticks that dry out my lips, so I’m not a huge fan of anything matte. The great thing about the Avon Ultra Color Indulgence Lipstick is its lightweight feel – it’s very lush and majorly hydrating, almost like a balm. The shade I have on is Spring Lilac, which looks really purple on the bullet, but is more pink on my lips. Lesson learnt: never judge a lipstick by its bullet! I really admire its durability though; I can apply it in the morning, down several cups of tea and munch on my brekkie without it budging.”

If you love a lipstick that really pops, I recommend Spring Lilac from Avon.

TONI&GUY Classic Perfect Tease Dry Shampoo

bh’s Beth says:

“I’m a devotee of dry shampoos, so I jumped at the chance to try this goodie. I really liked the sleek, modern packaging, and also the generous size, which gives the impression it’s going to last a long time (what is it with dry shampoos running out in, like, a week?). The instructions advise to shake the can prior to spraying as well as during the process, which can be a bit of a pain if you’re in a rush, but definitely gives a better result. The soapy scent is a bit strong for my liking, but I’m particularly sensitive to strong smells so I don’t think it’d bother many other users. It also goes on clear, which I absolutely love – no telltale white patches! The product promises to give hair soft definition, and this was definitely the case – my hair looked really smooth (as opposed to dry and coarse) after use.”

Redken Cerafill Dense Fx

bh’s Whitney says:

“I really love the Redken Cerafill Dense Fx. Why? Because I’m all about big, Brigitte Bardot-style hair with heaps of volume at the roots. And because I’m not naturally this blonde, I get a ton of volume from the bleach when I first dye it, however, when my natural, softer hair comes through between colourings, it starts to look a little flat and boring. Thankfully, this product sorts that right out. I love the fact that I don’t need to wash it out, either! Just pop it in, then style as normal. How easy is that? I’ve been using it for a few weeks now and I’ve noticed my hair seems thicker, even right down to the ends. If I could give one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t put on more than the recommended amount as it could leave your scalp a little sensitive.”

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure

bh’s Rosie says:

“I’m a sucker for warm nail polish hues in winter, so this deep plum-purple scores major points in my book. Part of the Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure range, Pat on the Black comes with a flat brush which makes lacquering my nails a breeze. I have a pretty steady hand when it comes to applying nail polish, but the flat brush makes it really easy. All you need is two coats for a brilliant finish, and when used with a top coat, the polish only starts chipping after four days – which is a huge drawcard for me! This polish is perfect for anyone who finds it tricky to apply precise strokes without making a mess, and who loves rocking a deep, dark and warm mani.”
