The three products that cured my chicken skin

I’ve had chicken skin (also known as Keratosis Pilaris) for as long as I can remember. Part of the reason why I love winter is that I can cover up and not worry about feeling self-conscious about my arms for a few months of the year. However, in a twist of fate I wasn’t expecting, I can now look forward to sleeveless season: My chicken skin is cured!
I have tried so many products over the years on my quest to rid my upper arms of those little red bumps, but nothing ever seemed to work (until now). I had almost accepted my fate when I stumbled across a trifecta of glorious glycolic filled products that have finally banished the bumps...

Alpha-H Liquid Gold Luxe Resurfacing Body Cloths
My original intention when trying out the Alpha-H Liquid Gold Luxe Resurfacing Body Cloths was to get rid of the remnants of my fake tan, so the effect it’s had on my chicken skin was an unexpected (but very welcome) surprise. The cloths have two sides: One with a rougher texture that buffs away dead skin cells, the other which is smooth and hydrates the skin to give it some luminosity. The double sides are handy, because one of the side-effects of exfoliation can be dry skin, so the hydrating side safeguards against that straight away. Don't just stop at your arms though, I use these all over my body a couple of times a week to keep my skin baby soft.
Skinstitut Glycolic Scrub 14%
After a friend recommended the Skinstitut Glycolic Scrub 14% (adorebeauty.com.au, $49) to me, I picked it up thinking it would be great for my face. Unfortunately, after feeling the grainy texture I knew it would be too rough on my semi-sensitive skin. I kept it in my shower to use on my body to stop it going to waste, and boy am I glad I did. As soon as I started using it on my arms I knew I’d found a winner - it felt like I could feel my chicken skin gently buffing away. With biodegradable jojoba beads and 14 per cent glycolic acid, this scrub delivers a one-two punch of exfoliants that’s unlike anything else I've ever tried.
Paula's Choice Resist Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% AHA
With 5 stars from the beautyheaven members, you don’t just have to take my word for it - Paula's Choice Resist Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% AHA works a treat. With an antioxidant-rich formula and 10 per cent glycolic acid, this body lotion isn’t just exfoliating, it’s also deeply hydrating and restorative. In my search for chicken skin cures, I've been guilty of over-exfoliating and making the problem worse, but this fragrance-free, non-irritating lotion mitigates the risk of overdoing it with the chemical exfoliants.

I use Ameliorate body lotion which contains lactic acid. Which makes me think I'll just use chemical exfoliants that I feel are too harsh for my face. Physical scrubs definitely didn't work for me

A kese mitt really helped with mine. Really helped slough the dead skin off. I used the skin silking mitt, but really any kese mitt would do.

I have very minor, hardly noticeable breakouts of this occasionally. I’m guessing it’s probably because of something I’ve used or something I’ve eaten. It’s so minor that it doesn’t really bother me. I exfoliate lightly and keep up the moisturiser.

I have this on the backs of my arms and all over my legs :( I was doing really well with the Lanate Body Cream, until I started using fake tan over summer and had a break from Lanate. Now I’m back to step 1!

Whoops, looks like it has been a year since I neglected this routine! I have just purchased Paula's Choice Resist Weightless Body Treatment, so I'm hoping that will do the trick for me. Dry brushing seems to help a bit too!

Great article bh! I get this condition too, mainly on my upper arms and calves. I started using st ives mandarin facial scrub on the affected areas every second day and its really effective, smells great and a good price point too $9.95.

I had this for many years on my upper arms. It didnt bother me that much and i just figured it was normal. I would always moisturise and exfoliate, etc and one day i noticed that I no longer had this problem. I have no idea how or what i used that solved the problem but its now gone which is amazing as I had it since I was in my teens. Im now in my early 50's.

I have it but it's very mild. I just try to use moisturisers with the most simple and least ingredients. Mainly Australian-made products because I find them really gentle on the skin.

I think I get a little bit of this on my upper arms, as sometimes I get the hard white bumps. Mine doesn't seem to be too serious though.

Luckily I do not have this but I have other skin conditions like eczema so I can get rough itchy patches in my skin.

I was so self conscious of this as a teenager! I always had it on my thighs and arms. I used to exfoliate so often and it didn't improve. Currently not noticeable and I'm assuming it's because it's summer.

I exfoliate well, focus on high carb (raw fruit) diet to clean up the skin/blood and hydrate well, and use only natural based skincare afterwards on. I do try to keep my showers as short as possible and dry the city water off well immediately. This helps to bring my skin back to glowy and soft, no bumps.

I looked at the pics how this condition looks like, and seems I have this in very mild form from time to time. It appears when I shower too long and often in city water (my skin sensitive on high amount of chlorine and other chemicals in it), use wrong skin products and eat too much of high fat/protein food.
