The dos and don’ts of black

The dos and don’ts of black

Whether we’re talking about fashion or beauty, black is as classic a colour as they come. It’s timeless and oh-so-chic, so we thought we’d go through the rules for wearing the darkest of hues. From rocking black make-up and clothes like a pro to making the most of your black mane and banishing blackheads the right way, these are our beauty rules for all things black.

HOW TO WEAR BLACK MAKE-UP

Do line and define
For a polished make-up look, focus on enhancing your eyes. To do that, stock up on black make-up essentials like a kohl pencil, liquid liner and mascara. Then, lightly line your lower lash line with a kohl pencil and your upper lash line with liquid liner. Finish with a few coats of mascara, and your peepers will look more defined and stand out from the crowd.

Don’t go OTT
To avoid clashing colours or looking overdone, use make-up to highlight just one key facial feature. If you’re wearing a bright lip colour, keep the rest of your eye make-up to a minimum with a slick of black liquid liner on your upper lash line and a bit of mascara on your lashes. On the flipside, if you’re doing a smoky eye, tone down your lips with a nude or soft pink lippie.

HOW TO CARE FOR BLACK HAIR

Do amp up the shine factor
The best thing about dark hair? It has the ability to look seriously glossy. Boost your mane’s glossy sheen by applying a shine serum while it’s damp. Once your locks are dry, lightly mist them with a shine spray.

Don’t use regular dry shampoo
Unless you’re cool with flaunting white powdery patches, avoid freshening up your day-old black mop with regular dry shampoo. Instead, opt for a dry shampoo that’s formulated with dark or black pigments that’ll blend seamlessly with your natural hair colour.

HOW TO GET RID OF BLACKHEADS

Do treat them properly
Treating blackheads starts with a proper deep-cleansing skin care routine, and there’s one particular ingredient that can work wonders: charcoal. It draws out dirt and oil from deep within pores for cleaner, healthier-looking skin.

Keen to reap the benefits of charcoal? Bioré® Skincare has an entire charcoal range. We recommend cleansing morning and night with the Pore Penetrating Charcoal Bar and targeting blackheads face-first once a week with the Deep Cleansing Charcoal Pore Strips. It’s that easy!

Don’t squeeze or pick them
Poking, prodding and squeezing blackheads with your fingers not only can damage your skin, but it can also cause more grit and grime to build up. Keep your mitts far away from your complexion and leave your blackhead-fighting skin care products in charge!

A BLACK OUTFIT

Do get your glow on
Nothing screams chic like an all-black-everything outfit teamed with a gorgeous (faux) sun-kissed glow. The night before an event, apply a self-tan or treat yourself to a professional spray tan. If you’re after just a subtle hint of colour, use a gradual tanner on your bod in the lead-up.

Don’t be afraid to make a statement
An all-black outfit is the perfect canvas for making a bold beauty or fashion statement. Our advice? Team a brightly coloured clutch with a popping pink or red pout.
