Masterchef’s Poh Ling Yeow shares her interesting kitchen beauty hack

Many of you probably recognise Poh Ling Yeow from her time on Masterchef, where she spent most cooks making our heart rates spike by attempting 60-minute cakes in 40-minute challenges.

With many strings to her bow, Poh is not only a talented cook and TV presenter, but also an artist with 10+ exhibitions under her belt. And prior to all this, she also used to be a makeup artist.

beautyheaven recently attended a L’Oréal Paris event where Poh (as an ambassador for the brand) was in attendance, and revealed she’d once done the makeup for supermodel Miranda Kerr

“She booked four really big campaigns after that,” Poh said. “It was Seafolly, and maybe Bonds and two others; I just thought, wow, she’s going to be huge.”

@pohlingyeowIt certainly explains why Poh’s own makeup always seems to be on-point. However, when it comes to her everyday beauty routine, Poh admitted: “I’ve always been unfussy with my skin care.”Speaking of the new L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Laser X3 Pure Retinol Night Serum, she said using it in the evening is “the one special thing I do”.

The only other secret she let us in on? “I actually take my makeup off with olive oil,” she said. And really, do we expect anything else from someone who spends so much time in the kitchen?

It’s not a totally unusual hack, either. Plenty of people use traditional kitchen items like coconut oil and olive oil to remove makeup, and even Emma Stone once admitted to using baking powder as a cleanser.

If you’re going to try Poh’s trick, we’d recommend pairing it with a microfibre cloth to help lift out makeup and dirt.

But if you’d prefer to keep your olive oil for the pan and not your face, a cleansing balm or oil cleanser is an excellent alternative as a gentle first-step cleanse.

  1. Hi Elly, I get macadamia oil from the supermarket – just the regular oil aisle! It’s like $5 for 250ml. Couldn’t really be cheaper. My skin tends towards the dry so it’s nice to be able to use oil liberally. I do still like rosehip too – but it’s nice to alternate and the expensive rosehip lasts longer. Also I find Macademia just works well for my skin.
