How To Make Your Morning Skincare Routine More Than Mediocre

Okay, we know: getting up is hard. Making it through a shower when you’re still half asleep can be tricky! But building out a foolproof morning skin care routine is easy!

Well, easy when you have us on your side, that is. We’re here to help you stock your skin care collection with everything you need to get your face feeling fresh, awake and ready to take on the day ahead.

One incredible morning skin care routine coming right up!

Morning Skin Care Routine

Step 1: Cleanser

The first thing you’ll want to do is freshen your face; skin care residue from the night before and pesky bacteria have obviously got to go!

Now, washing solely with water is an option (as it can be gentler, especially on sensitive skin types), but we’re generally fans of starting the day off on a super fresh foot (AKA clearing away congestion with a morning face wash).

Our fave? PB SKN REFRESH Gel Cleanser ($48 at PB SKN). It’s a revitalising gel cleanser loaded with smoothing, brightening and soothing ingredients that’ll get your skin perfectly primed for what’s to come.

Step 2: Toning Mist

It’s not uncommon for our faces to be a little flushed post-shower. Reduce redness and gently tone in one step by opting for a toning mist hybrid.

We love the Dr. LeWinn’s Recoverëderm Gentle Skin Protecting Toning Mist ($29.95 at Dr. LeWinn’s). Not only is it alcohol-free (a must in our book), but it’s both super hydrating and soothing (thanks to a fancy combo of marine algae and tazman berry).

Skin also absorbs products better when slightly damp, so by misting straight out of the shower, you’ll set your face up to take in topicals like a dream. Good one, you!

Step 3: Serum

Now it’s time to treat. Help your face put its best (and brightest) foot forward by loading up on a serum that features an ‘active’ (AKA a ‘do-er’ that’ll address a skin concern).

Our suggestion? Swisse Vitamin C 10% Brightening Booster Serum ($24.99 at Swisse). It features the transformative trio of radiance-revealing vitamin C, skin-soothing vitamin E and nourishing niacainamide. What does that mean?! It’s designed for daily use to give your complexion a tone-evening, illuminating boost in a flash.

For the record, it’s recommended to leave about a minute in between applying each skin care step. So hey, why not load up on your serum and then lay out your clothes, pack your bag, or go make a coffee before getting started on moisturiser? Give that serum (and everything else coming up) time to sink in.

Step 4: Moisturiser

While your active serum is working away on addressing dullness and dark spots, it’s important to layer a hydrating moisturiser over the top. It’ll lock in all the goodness you’ve loaded up on thus far while also making sure skin gets the morning moisture hit it’s craving.

When it comes to day cream, you want to go for something that’s light and fresh (as heavy creams are more for overnight wear) but still gets the job done.

It’s hard to beat the Bobbi Brown Hydrating Water Fresh Cream ($89 at Bobbi Brown) in the day cream department. It’s lightweight but luxuriously hydrating all at once. As a bonus, it both preps the skin perfectly for makeup or leaves it silky-smooth and super soft for the bare-faced day head.

Step 5: SPF

Lastly, sunscreen! Top off your routine by applying a protective SPF. We advise opting for a sunscreen with both UVA and UVB broad spectrum protection.

Luckily, there are tons of options, such as the SkinCeuticals Ultra Facial Defense SPF50+ ($55 at SkinCeuticals) that fit that bill. Blessings!

FYI, you’ll want to try to apply your sunscreen (liberally, may we add) at least 30 minutes before setting foot outside to make sure it’s ready to work. Now go forth! The day is yours.
