It’s my biggest downfall right now, the bane of my life and, most alarmingly, a source of premature ageing – eek! I’m talking about sugar, of course!

Apart from the obvious 3.30-itis, when a drop in energy levels makes it incredibly hard to steer clear of the biscuit tin, I get the odd morning where I arrive at work at 8am looking for a sweat treat and praying there’s a little square of chocolate left from yesterday afternoon’s office snack attack (working in an office full of girls has its highs and its sugary-sweet lows). The latter troubles me the most as a breakfast that consists of chocolate doesn’t fit into the healthy life I’m trying to lead – at all!

But it’s the not-so-sweet effects of scoffing sugary foods has on the ageing of my skin that really alarms me. And on closer inspection you’ll discover that it’s not just lollies, cakes and cookies that we need to watch out for, it’s sauces, pre-packaged food and fruit too.  (Yes, healthy fruit. High sugar fruits include mangoes, grapes, pineapples and cherries, but don’t ban them from your diet; just be mindful.)

The sour side of sugar – without getting too technical – is the fact that excess sugar in our blood stream can damage our protein molecules altering their form so that they become new molecules that damage collagen and elasticity in our skin – resulting in wrinkles and sagging skin.

The good news is that it’s never too late to slow the process. Opt for low glycemic (low-GI) foods; try an anti-ageing supplement like Alpha-H AlphaCeuticals Skin Renewal Vitamin Supplements, which contain antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties to help defend skin against premature ageing; invest in skincare products packed with vitamin C such as Cellex-C Advanced-C Neck Firming Cream, Beautician’s Secret Vitamin C Radiance Booster, Skin Doctors Potent C Triple Strength Vitamin C Serum and Ella Bache Radiance C

Now pop those lollies back where you found them and go have a piece of rye bread topped with tomato and sliced avocado!
