Retinol gets reborn

Retinol gets reborn

When it comes to reducing the signs of ageing on your skin, it can be hard to know where to start. With so many different formulations and anti-ageing innovations out there, choosing the right product to turn back the clock on your skin is no easy feat.

What is retinol?

Retinol is one of the classic skin care ingredients that has famously been working for years to improve the signs of ageing. A form of vitamin A, retinol comes in various strengths. It works by increasing cell production in the top layer of the skin, encouraging collagen production and reducing pigmentation, resulting in smoother, plumper, and younger looking skin.

Retinol myth #1

Because it’s so efficacious, retinol is assumed to be harsh on skin. The new Indeed Labs Retinol Reface Skin Resurfacer contains three different types of retinol to deliver a more gentle, effective and faster working formula. The triple-retinol formula contains Retinol Rapid Action to deliver quick results and Retinol Micro-Spheres to slowly release pure retinol into the skin. What sets this retinol formulation apart from the rest is that is contains a retinol-like peptide to deliver the same anti-ageing benefits of traditional retinol, but without irritation, while also comforting and calming the skin.

This combination of three types of retinol means that the rate of cell turnover product is quicker, resulting in smoother wrinkles, faded sunspots, and building more collagen, faster.

While many other retinol products usually come with quite a hefty price tag, Retinol Reface is an inexpensive formulation at $34.99 for a 30mL tube, making it affordable yet effective choice for improving the visible signs of ageing.

Retinol myth #2

Over the years, one retinol myth that keeps resurfacing is that it can’t be used during the daytime as it can increase the risk of sunburn. Research has revealed that, in fact, the redness that occurs when exposing skin to the sun while wearing retinol is actually likely caused by heat exposure. Having said this, it is important to protect your skin from sun exposure every day, so be sure to use a daily moisturiser containing SPF such as Cetaphil UVA/UVB Defence SPF 50+ or QV Face Moisturising Day Cream with SPF 30+.

Retinol myth #3

Another myth about retinol suggests that it should not be used around the eyes, as the skin is too sensitive. However, studies have revealed that those who apply retinol around the eyes see the best anti-ageing results. When applying retinol to this area, only apply it to within one centimetre of the actual eye because the product will run towards the eye anyway. If the product does make it’s way into the eye, it may sting, but studies reveal that it won’t do any harm.

Are you beginning to see the visible signs of ageing in your skin? Do you use products containing retinol?
