Beauty brands from around the globe

Have you ever thought about where your beauty products come from? Your bathroom is potentially full of beauty finds from France, England, Italy or even a remote island you’ve never heard of. Just because you bought it from the supermarket down the road, doesn’t mean it hasn’t come from halfway across the world to land in your bathroom cabinet. Below are just some of our favourite beauty brands that originated from overseas and still source ingredients from their homeland today.

ISRAEL – Ahava

The lightbulb moment behind Ahava came when a spa technician, Ziva Gilad, saw tourists scooping up mud from the Dead Sea to take home. Ahava products are made using the same mud, along with other mineral-based compounds.

Top product pick: AHAVA Dermud Intensive Hand Cream

“My husband brought this product home from a business trip, direct from the shore of the Dead Sea. It made my skin feel as if I’d just been for a manicure. Incidentally, Ahava means love. So love yourself today and treat your skin.” –chrisbabe1971

HUNGARY – Eminence Organic Skin Care

Eminence began as a family business in Budapest in 1958, and to this day, the ingredients used in its products are still organically grown and handpicked in Hungary.

Top product pick: Eminence Sweet Red Rose Whip Moisturiser

“For YEARS I have been trying to find a moisturiser with the perfect balance of hydration and oil control and here it is, in a beautifully packaged, baby pink, whipped cream-esque moisturiser. It’s a rich, oil-free, mattifying moisturiser that delivers what it promises. My skin is soft and hydrated and it keeps away that oily shine throughout the day.” – Aimee588

SWITZERLAND – Mavala

All of Mavala’s nail treatment products are developed at the Mavala Nail Clinic in Geneva. They’re then tested in manicure schools across Europe. Tough gig!

Top product pick: Mavala Scientifique Penetrating Nail Hardener

“This totally works. It makes nails so hard they’re impossible to break. I can grow my nails very long using this. I first tried it 20 years ago and I haven’t found anything to rival it since.” – softness

FRANCE – L’OCCITANE

At the age of 23, Oliver Baussan produced essential oil from wild rosemary and lavender, which he then sold at markets in Provence. Two years later, he opened the first L’OCCITANE boutique in the village Volx. The rest, as they say, is history.

Top product pick: L’OCCITANE Almond Milk Concentrate

The thing I love the most is the texture of the cream. It is creamy and smooth, yet light with no greasy residue. It has a wonderful vanilla and almond scent that I cannot get enough of. It absorbed quickly and left my skin feeling so silky and supple.” – May318

CALIFORNIA – St Tropez

It’s only fitting that the brand obsessed with bronzing originated from sunny California back in 1993. These days, St Tropez spray tans are performed every minute, while one St Tropez product is sold every fifteen seconds.

Top product pick: St Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse

“This is the BEST at-home tanning solution I have ever used. The directions on the bottle are easy to follow and it gives a flawless tan every time. It doesn’t ever go orange, even as it wears off. I get compliments on how natural it looks every time I have it on.” – Cherie751

LONDON – Sanctuary Spa

In 1977, US choreographer Gary Cockerill founded The Sanctuary Spa in London’s Covert Garden as a gift to his ballerina wife. It was a place for dancers to restore their bodies and truly unwind. Now, the brand’s products are designed to provide a similarly relaxing and luxurious experience at home.

Top product pick: Sanctuary Spa’s Spa Essentials Hot Sugar Scrub

“This is amazing. It exfoliates the skin better than anything else I’ve tried and it actually does heat up. It’s one of those products that wows me every time I use it.” – Hellonickers

NEW ZEALAND –Trilogy

The first five Trilogy rosehip oil products were launched in New Zealand, after founders Catherine de Groot and Sarah Gibbs wanted to create products that were not only natural, but performed well. To this day, certified organic rosehip oil is the signature ingredient in all Trilogy products.

Top product pick: Trilogy Rosehip Oil Antioxidant+

“The ingredients in this product are so natural and great for the skin, and it also has a lovely organic scent. After use my skin feels softer, plumped up and nourished. It also looks healthier and more radiant. Trilogy is one of my favourite natural skin care brands and I would happily recommend this rosehip oil to others.” – Chickybabe1
