Banish breakouts

Banish breakouts

Q) I am 34 and I still get acne. Nothing vicious, just two to three visible spots on my face at any one time. The problem is I also have sensitive skin, which reacts to some of the harsher treatments. Stronger acne-treating products tend to cause dry skin, itchiness and redness between my eyes, above and within my eyebrows and around the jawbone. Catch 22!

A) It can be hard to find products specifically designed for adult acne as the majority of products on the market are for teenage acne, which are much stronger and, as you say, harsher on the skin. I recommend you buy products specifically designed for adult acne and breakouts. In particular, look for medicated products that will gently clear the skin and contain a powerful mix of anti-inflammatory ingredients. There are some terrific overnight clearing gels and sebum-clearing masks that calm inflammation, relieve congestion and prevent future breakouts, without being harsh on the skin.

Keep an eye out for these great ingredients:

Salicylic acid is fantastic for clearing congestion without irritating the skin. Interestingly, it is actually used in aspirin.

Calendula, green tea, horse chestnut, licorice and chamomile help treat breakouts while soothing and calming irritation.

Hyaluronic acid helps prevent the dehydration and dry patches associated with clearing products.

Niacinamide, biotin, nordihydroguaiaretic acid, tea tree, zinc gluconate and yeast extract are all fantastic at purifying the skin, promoting clarity and preventing breakouts.
