The alphabet may be filled with an array of letters, but A is definitely our favourite right now. No, this is not because it comes before the other 25, or because it’s one of the most popular vowels out there… we’re utterly in love because it’s possibly the best anti-ageing vitamin out there. Yes, vitamin A can do amazing things for your skin, and you should befriend it immediately.

WHAT IT IS: vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin – just like vitamin E – and is a member of the retinoids family. (Heard of retinol A before? This is a ready-to-use form of the vitamin.) It is sourced from both animals and plants.

WHAT IT DOES: other than supporting your retina (the part of the eye that allows you to see light), vitamin A helps to support a healthy immune system, boost cell production and bone strength, and prevent infection. Some studies show it may even stop heart disease and some cancers from forming.

WHY IT’S GOOD FOR YOUR SKIN: vitamin A is famous for its ability to speed up cell turnover, leading to healthy, glowing, younger-looking skin. It is also brilliant at repairing damaged cells and rejuvenating the skin. When used topically or digested internally, its renewing qualities work to improve skin tone, softness, smoothness, plump up fine lines and prevent wrinkles from forming. Helpful sidenote: for topical creams to have an effect on the skin, they must contain a minimum of 0.5% vitamin A concentrate.

FUN FACT: vitamin A was the first vitamin to be discovered, founded in the early 1900s.

NOT SO FUN FACTS: too much vitamin A can actually be a little toxic to the body, and an upset stomach, dry skin and eyes and headaches can result. Stick to 500-1000 mg per day, please, and avoid it if you're pregnant. Topical creams containing the hard-working vitamin can also leave your skin more sensitive to UV rays, so be sure to apply your daily SPF.
