9 step natural anti-ageing skincare routine

If you thought that an effective anti-aging skin care routine relied on harmful ingredients, toxins and chemicals to keep wrinkles at bay, think again. In 2018 we’re lucky enough to have a plethora of all-natural alternatives that will leave you looking youthful and glowy, without any questionable ingredients.

We spoke to founder of New Zealand natural beauty brand Antipodes, Elizabeth Barbalich, to find out which all-natural ingredients are the most effective at fighting the aging process.

What should we look for in an all-natural cleanser?

All good skin care routines start with an effective cleanser. “Cleansing is important to prevent pore blockages so your skin can produce the right amount of sebum to keep it soft and nourished,” explains Elizabeth. Look for premium natural ingredients such as exfoliating kiwifruit, vibrant hibiscus flower, and antibacterial manuka honey.

How often should we exfoliate our skin?

According to Elizabeth, you should exfoliate whenever your skin calls for a new life. “Our Reincarnation Pure Facial Polish & Exfoliator is effective yet gentle, using a formulation of avocado oil and jojoba beads to lift away lifeless skin, while calendula oil and carrot seed extract help rescue stressed skin,” she says.

What should we look for in an exfoliating product?

In case you haven’t heard, microbeads (plastic beads that are often included in non-natural skin care products) are bad news. “These have a devastating effect on marine life when they are flushed into the ocean and are mistaken for food,” explains Elizabeth. Instead, look for products that include natural exfoliating ingredients such as jojoba beads or hibiscus flowers.

What are the best all-natural ingredients that fight wrinkles?

According to Elizabeth, it all comes down to hydration, hydration, hydration! “If your skin is kept nourished and moist, it will be supple and less prone to signs of aging,” she says. Look for skin care products that are formulated with nutrient-rich avocado oil, which is known for its high level of vitamins and omegas, plus it’s a natural humectant too. “Our best anti-aging natural skin care features new science discoveries such as revolutionary Vinanza® antioxidant extracts from the grapes and kiwifruit grown in our pristine vineyards and orchards,” she says. The results are backed by science, indicating their anti-aging potency. “The same is true for bioactive ingredients including manuka honey and avocado oil.”

What are the best all-natural ingredients for pigmentation?

Pigmentation and redness is a tricky skin care concern to target, but you don’t need to resort to harsh, chemical-laden products to get results. “Effective natural ingredients that help reduce or inhibit your skin’s melanin production include peony flower and Persian silk flower, while our revolutionary antioxidant Vinanza®  extracts Kiwi, Grape and Kiwi and Oxifend have been clinically shown to brighten skin in independent scientific investigations,” says Elizabeth.

What should we look for in an anti-ageing serum?

To keep your skin youthful, look for a serum with antioxidants that will help to protect your skin cells from free radical damage and the effects of pollution.

Do you recommend face masks? And if so, what ingredients should we look for?

Face masks are great! As long as you’re using the right mask for your skin type. “You need to be careful that you are not drying out your skin or adding oil to an already oily complexion,” explains Elizabeth. She recommends the Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey Mask for unwanted blemishes and the Antipodes Halo Skin-Brightening Mud Mask as a detox mask that will leave you with a brighter complexion.

What should we look for in a moisturiser?

“Again, it’s important to choose something that suits your skin condition and leaves it feeling hydrated and nourished,” says Elizabeth.

And what about eye cream?

An eye cream is a crucial part of any anti-aging routine. “Anti-aging and skin-brightening ingredients are really important for the delicate eye area which is one of the first places to show wrinkles and dark circles,” explains Elizabeth. She recommends ingredients such as Vitamin C, Vinanza® Grape and manuka honey.
