How do you feel about ageing?

Growing older is a fact of life – there’s no denying it and there’s no avoiding it. And this fact got me thinking – how do women actually feel about ageing? Are some scared of the thought of looking in the mirror one day and wondering where their youth went? Are some grateful to age  and experience the process of life? Does ageing make women appreciate their lives more?

We spoke to real women in our forums and in the beautyheaven office to find out just how they feel about ageing…

“I really believe ageing is a privilege not everyone gets to experience. Instead of resisting it, I plan on embracing the process to age with grace!” – bh’s Aja

“I think ageing is a bit scary. But I should be fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to be old one day. I think spending my youth wisely in preparation for old age will make it a lot less scary.” – bh member Lucrecia629

“I may only be 24 years of age, but I’m definitely scared of ageing. Thankfully no fine lines or wrinkles have appeared on my face just yet, but I’m dreading their appending appearance. Lucky there’s always botox…” – bh’s Caitlin

“I’ve accepted and embraced the idea that ageing is far better than the alternative! Having lost a parent at the age I turn next month, I am seeing just how young they really were when they died. So I am looking forward to [it and] I hope to live many more decades, wrinkles and all.” – bh member Linda_Vesinger

“I’m actually pretty excited to age, as funny as that sounds! In my head ageing = gaining new life experiences, so I’m keen to see how that plays out on my skin. My mum (who’s in her 50s but doesn’t look like it) has really good skin, and her mother before her, and her mother before her as well, so I’m keen to see if one day I’ll be passing this down to my girl/s.” – bh’s Sophia

“I’ll happily accept laugh lines, as it means I’ve been happy in my life. I’ll do everything I can to keep my skin in good condition, drink plenty of water and do my best to keep healthy, as there as so many other things relating to ageing other than looks. Like other beauties, as I get older I’m more concerned about health, and the health of my loved ones. Wrinkles are a privilege so many don’t get to earn.” – bh member Beauty_Jem

“Ageing doesn’t terrify me (yet)! I ensure my skin is treated properly which includes ALWAYS removing my make-up before bed, using a cleansing brush every night and using products that are most suitable to my skin type and needs. I am just taking it as it comes which is accompanied by healthy eating and exercise. At the end of the day I am doing everything [I can] to age gracefully.” – bh’s Isabelle

“I feel very blessed that my mum had the most amazing skin and she passed that down to me. I started looking after my skin when I was only about age 12 and 40 years on I see how that’s paying off. I look at women that are a little younger than I am or older and although I have issues with rosacea my skin is really very good for someone my age.” – bh member MeeDee

“Ageing is not something I was prepared for. At the age of 25 I first noticed fine lines around my eyes – that was a bit of a shock, I can tell you that. I’d much rather go grey and have to start dying my hair then having more fine lines and wrinkles heading my way. So yes, it does terrify me! The Capricorn in me can’t handle the fact there is nothing really within my control that can be done – apart from botox of course but I guess I am not that desperate… YET.” – bh’s Mel

“I try and be positive about ageing, but there [are] times I don’t like what I see in the mirror. Turning 40 18 months ago did depress me, then I remembered an Oprah show years ago, where one of the guests wisely said that in 10 years time you’ll wish you were the age you are now so enjoy the present.” – bh member IndieAna

“They say your 30s are your best years, so in many ways I’m quite excited to age! Even though I’m only in my early 20s, I smile with my eyes so I already have my fair share of smile/laugh lines. But the more I get of those – the better. I think it’s a beautiful, organic symbol of living life as happily and positively as possible!” – bh’s Ally

“Even though I don’t love the signs of ageing I see on my face, and I use everything I can to try and slow down the ageing process, when I look in the mirror I am grateful. Every year I get is a gift. I just want my health and my loved ones to be safe.” – bh member sparrow x

“I’ll be honest: the thought of growing older scares me a little bit. I’m not particularly concerned about wrinkles, but the idea of ‘slowing down’ and getting stiff and sore is something I really dread! Hopefully I can stay fit and healthy like my nanna, who lives her life more like a 40-year-old than a 72-year-old!” – bh’s Beth
