We uncovered the best anti-ageing skin care tips

Looking for the best anti-ageing creams and treatments to try? We asked three different skin care experts to create an anti-ageingbeauty routine that focuses on repairing the skin barrier, healing your skin fast and balancing your complexion.

Tilly Barnett, No.13 The Beauty Avenue

5 must-have skin care ingredients

  1. Peptides: They send signals to our cells to let them know how to function. For example, peptides can send a signal to collagen to prompt the formation of new collagen.
  2. Antioxidants: Help fight the free radical damage we face every day, which is a big factor when it comes to prematurely aging skin.
  3. Retinol (Vit A): This ingredient helps promote collagen.
  4. Vitamin C: It helps to build collagen and even out skin tone plus it’s a powerful antioxidant.
  5. AHAs (I like Glycolic and Lactic): Both are exfoliating to help smooth fine lines and wrinkles and to improve cell turnover, which slows down as we age.

4 essential skin care products

  1. Cleanse: Use a gentle cleanser in the morning but at night be sure to double cleanse to remove makeup and dirt, plus to prep skin for creams to follow. In the evening, I suggest a cleanser with AHAs for a deeper cleanse and gentle exfoliation.
  2. Serum: During the day, apply an antioxidant serum, and at night a more active one containing vitamin A or C.
  3. Moisturise: In the AM, use a lighter version or a sunscreen with moisturizing properties and antioxidants. My favourite is Elizabeth Arden Pro Triple Action Protector. At night, go for one richer. Our skin works hard overnight, while we are sleeping, so it’s important to apply anti-ageing products that will work as we sleep.
  4. Sunscreen: This is nonnegotiable and a must every day of the year.

Best in-salon anti-ageing treatments

Peels and Omnilux are Tilly’s go-to for anti-ageing. “I’m not big on downtime and find you can still get a great result with a 30% peel,” says Tilly. “It will give skin a deep exfoliation by dissolving dead skin cells, smoothing skin texture, refining pores and softening lines.” While Omnilux light therapy, she says, will stimulate collagen and elastin to help increase hydration and plump up the skin. Tilly also recommends using them in combination to see the best results.

Biggest anti-ageing dos and don’ts

DO Wear a sunscreen no matter what time of the year. The best preventative for anti-ageing there is!

DON’T Never sleep in makeup – make sure to cleanse skin both morning and night. By cleansing at night serums and moisturisers will be much more effective.

Must-have skin care ingredients

  1. Organic rosehip oil, apricot kernel oil, peach kernel oil: These ingredients are found to be extremely beneficial in tissue regeneration for conditions such as burns, facial wrinkles, scarring after surgery (by reducing the redness, hyperpigmentation and reducing formation of keloid scar tissue), reducing wrinkles and helping to counterbalance the drying effects of the sun here in Australia.
  2. Organic essential oils of rose, jasmine, neroli, frankincense, palmarosa and carrot extract: These ingredients have hydrating properties, making them ideal for mature dry and/or sensitive skins with lines/wrinkles, softening the skin, reducing redness and irritation and stimulate the growth of healthy new cells.

5 essential skin care products

  1. Milky exfoliants: I usually switch clients from milky cleansers to milky exfoliants for the evening (we have four to choose from) containing small granules to help increase our skin’s cell rate turnover that naturally slows down as we age.
  2. Organic hydrosol: It’s essential to use an essential oil water mist on clean dry skin. The skin’s surface cells virtually have no moisture so by misting our face with this product we rehydrate the surface cells to reduce tightness and fine lines.
  3. Facial and eye serum: Then immediately apply a facial serum & eye serum as they penetrate deeper than what a moisturiser can do. It’s important to wait 20 minutes before applying a moisturiser. If you apply a moisturiser immediately it bonds with the serum and nothing will penetrate deeply.
  4. Moisturiser: Moisturiser is necessary under makeup to prevent the makeup absorbing into your skin.
  5. Hydrating mask: Apply a hydrating mask overnight on top of a serum to give your skin a hydrating boost, to smooth out fine lines and plump up your skin.

Biggest anti-ageing dos and don’ts

DO Know and understand you are a beautiful vibrant woman and be proud of your years.

DO Drink a minimum of 2 litres of water a day plus more if you are taking medication.

DO Get 8 hours sleep a night (no phones/laptops in the bedroom as it disturbs sleep).

DO Eat organic food

DO See a naturopath or nutritionist for extra support.

DON’T Focus on the negative. Focus only on the positive.

Anna Field, The Paddington Room

3 must-have skin care ingredients

  1. Retinol: It’s effective however if the delivery system and the percentage of ph balance are not correct then retinol may not be as effective.
  2. Antioxidants: To slow the ageing process, it’s a must to use a combination of antioxidants to protect from free radical damage such as vitamin C.
  3. Hyaluronic acid: It’s a powerful hydrator that helps slow down the ageing process.

5 essential skin care products

  1. Serum: Upgrade your skincare routine by adding a serum but make sure you change your serums regularly. This gives the skin a different message and sparks results. If you do the same workouts at the gym your fitness will plateau – the same goes for skin care.
  2. Masks: Make them your best friend – don’t leave them in the back of your bathroom cupboard. Masks compensate for the lifestyle you lead and the environment you live in. The idea is to achieve healthier functioning skin. The healthier your skin, the younger it will stay and more beautiful it will appear.
  3. Hydrator: Daytime is about protection and hydration.
  4. Rejuvenator: Night time is about rejuvenation and repair. Ensure your night products are more demanding on your skin. While you rest you can be working on your best face.
  5. Eye creams: The eye area is the first area to show the signs of ageing so keep this area well-cared for. No one has ever regretted using an eye cream all their life…..plenty wish they had!

Anna’s skin care tip: It is important to get the balance right between cell renewal and strengthening the skin. So be careful not to bombard the skin with similar actions, mix it up a bit and get the products working as a team.

Best in-salon anti-ageing treatments

A great facial massage can make a huge difference in the skin. “A good therapist knows how to manipulate and strengthen the skin and the facial muscles to keep the skin and face firm and taut,” explains Anna. “LED treatments are an awesome way to stimulate the skin to help it keep collagen and elastin strong and increase oxygenation into the skin.”

Look for a therapist that knows how to use their products versus just following the formula. “Therapists should be customising and thinking outside the square versus performing facials by rote from a textbook,” says Anna.

Since pigmentation builds up over the years IPL is a great way to get in early to reduce it before it accumulates within the skin over time. “IPL also helps to increase firmness and reduce pigmentation and discolorations,” says Anna.

Biggest anti-ageing dos and don’ts

DO Complete your full skin care routine morning and night. You still need to cleanse in the morning as pollution doesn’t miraculously disappear overnight. Cleansing is not just about makeup removal. You also need to shed cells and detox at night and in order to do that you need to cleanse your face. Start as young as you can. My older clients who are in their eighties all agree that looking after their skin all their lives has made the biggest difference. So be consistent and you will have a life of great skin

DON’T Over exfoliating and peeling is the biggest trend but the biggest no-no. It is not about not peeling and exfoliating it’s about getting the right balance between removing and replenishing. Exfoliating/peels make your skin look instantly great, however, if you don’t replenish the skin, it dehydrates and reverts within days. A great treatment should leave an effect on your skin for a few weeks.
