Recently I started an experiment by going silicone-free with my hair care to see if it would improve the health of my extremely dry hair. I bought the muk Spa Argan Oil Repair Conditioner because it is free of silicone. I had been using my usual amount of this conditioner for several weeks. I was slightly disappointed with the lack of moisture that the conditioner gave (this is a common complaint with silicone-free conditioners). My solution to this in the past has been to increase the amount of conditioner, and this has always worked. In the case of Spa Argan Oil Repair Conditioner, it had the opposite effect. After using much more conditioner than usual then rinsing it out, I was surprised that my hair was far drier than usual, it was knotty and it had a brittle quality to it. The next day my hair felt like straw. When I washed my hair again, I could feel how much drier my hair was.
I had a similar experience when I used a protein treatment from another brand, so I immediately knew that the soy, wheat and corn proteins in muk's conditioner were the culprits. I've since discovered on curly hair forums and my hairdresser that curly hair has sufficient protein. Using a protein-rich product makes curly hair drier. As I only have a subtle wave that is only visible if it is cut by a good hairdresser, I was surprised by how drying protein was for my hair.
I'm surprised by this result because the proteins in the muk conditioner aren't at the top of the list of ingredients, but there's obviously enough to have a drying effect. Argan oil is listed as number eight on the list, so I would have expected it to have balanced out the protein.
The conditioner has a medium consistency and a lovely natural scent. It is housed within an amber plastic bottle. I found it difficult to dispense the conditioner out of the pump. I removed the pump to dispense the conditioner directly from the bottle, but the conditioner did not flow out.
