8 timeless beauty tricks that never fail

We talk about beauty tricks A LOT on this site.
But if you’re one of those multi-tasking masters who is currently learning a different language and helping your kid with their maths homework, all while trying to become a knitting pro, you probably don’t have much more room in that mind of yours for a million beauty tips and tricks.
So we thought we’d simplify it down to eight. Eight tips that are completely timeless, because if there’s no room to remember anything else, you might as well remember the ones that will always be relevant as the trends come and go.
#1 Don’t over pluck your brows
Even if the super skinny brows from the 90s make a comeback, RESIST. Thin brows are incredibly ageing and you can’t get back what you’ve lost, but you can always style what you have.
#2 Use self tan to help you appear slimmer
We’ve all been there. The plan to eat healthy and exercise months before the big event went out the window as soon as somebody mentioned pizza. While it may not help you squeeze into a smaller size, fake tan will instantly make you look slimmer and healthier in a pinch of the time. Try using St Tropez Self Tan Express the next time you’re caught out. You can control how dark the tan is by adjusting the time you wait before showering (one hour will leave you with a lighter result and three with a deeper glow).
#3 Fake clean hair
While slicked-back hair may be a trend every now and then, greasy hair is not. Keep a dry shampoo (like TONI&GUY Hair Meet Wardrobe Dry Shampoo) in your desk drawer or handbag so you’re never caught out. Or if you’re desperate, baby powder is also a great grease absorber.
#4 Choose make-up with an SPF
We all know how important it is to wear sunscreen every day, so it would be silly not to take advantage of make-up products that offer sun protection. By using a BB cream or tinted moisturiser like ModelCo BB Plus Cream or SunSense Daily Face SPF 50+, you’re not only perfecting your complexion, but protecting it from the sun at the same time.
#5 Stick your nails on
They say that the only time a woman is helpless is when her nails are drying. And it’s completely true. You can’t so much open a door or go to the toilet without the fear of a smudge. So if you don’t have time to be helpless, or even paint them in the first place, stick-on nails are your saviours. They are so many styles and colours to choose from these days, there’ll be something to suit every trend. Try Elegant Touch French Press On for a classic French mani.
#6 Blot your lips
Whether the colour trend is bright pinks or pale blues, ensuring your lipstick stays put will remain timeless. Always apply the first coat, blot with a tissue and then apply the second coat to create resistance against colour fade.
Bonus: to keep it from creeping onto your teeth, put your index finger in your mouth and drag it out while pursing your lips. Any at-risk lipstick will be transferred on to your fingers instead of your teeth.
#7 Apply perfume to pulse points
It will make the fragrance last longer as the warmth from these points activates and intensifies the scent. These points include your wrists, neck, temples, below the earlobes and behind the knees. Choose only two points to spritz so you’re not overdoing it.
#8 Hide your roots
Visible roots can really ruin a good hair day. When you don’t have time for a quick dye job, parting your hair in a zig-zag can help to hide your roots while simultaneously adding extra volume.

Yes! Wearing a high SPF - broad spectrum - every day since I was a teen. I'm so thankful I chose to do this. Back then in the '80s there was only one moisturiser available that I could find with SPF in it - it was an Olay one and I used it for years. Now there is so many more available which is great for modern gals of today!

Some great tips here. I follow most of them, but I don't use fake tan. It seems to turn me orange. Not a good look!

In my eyes Audrey Hepburn will always be one of the most beautiful women that ever walked the earth, she radiated beauty and a golden heart, what an inspiration to all women she was.

I live by all of these rules except #2 (but that's more of a personal thing). I certainly don't judge others who like to use a bit of fake tan. I generally avoid it given my natural colouring (I'm a ginger with extremely pale skin). In the past, I have tried fake tan and ended up looking like an Oompa Loompa! Also, I personally object to women (whatever their hue) being told that their natural skin colour isn't beautiful. It happens to pale women in the West as well as dark-skinned women the world over who are frequently encouraged to buy dangerous skin "bleaching" products. Wearing enough SPF every single day of my life and not over-plucking my brows are probably my own top two beauty rules to live by.

All great tips. The St Tropez Express is the only product from the range I haven't tried. Now is the time to invest for when I am unexpectedly invited somewhere and I still glow in the dark!

Great tips! My best beauty tip is to get enough sleep,at least 8 hours if you can. My skin looks fresher and my eye bags smaller if I can grab enough zzzzz's!

Isn't the photo of Audrey Hepburn inspirational? My best trick isn't a trick, it is to age gracefully. There's an art to that.
