Amber has been one of the common denominators in a lot of my favourite fragrances but if you asked me to what it was? Not a bloody clue. It’s a note that’s tricky to put your finger on. But we’re getting to the bottom of what amber is and what scents you should try if you like it.

What is amber?
Amber stems from ambergris, the very rare perfume ingredient that gets secreted and expelled from sperm whales (seriously). Because it is so rare, perfumers began to replicate the scent synthetically as amber.
In perfumes, amber is usually a bottom note that adds warmth and sensuality. It tends to be an earthy and sweet blend of Benzoin oil, Labdanum resin and vanilla.
