10 minutes with Michael Bublé: The crooner talks new music and his new fragrance

Michael Bublé really cares. That’s what stood out more than anything after meeting him. He’d been up since a heinous hour and was having a hectic day but everything from the warmth he showed me during our interview, to the way he interacted with his team and his enthusiasm for creating quality music and fragrances for his fans, showed just how much he cares.

I got the chance to chat with Michael about his (delicious) new fragrance, By Invitation Peony Noir, and all things perfume and music. You can check out everything the Canadian crooner had to say, below!

Getting into the fragrance game…

Michael Bublé released his first fragrance, By Invitation, back in 2016. But according to him, getting into the fragrance game wasn’t an easy decision.

“I was hesitant. Not because I didn’t think it was cool, I was hesitant because people are important to me and the public is important to me and I think that when you earn people’s trust and they’re working really hard in their lives at their jobs and they’re giving you their hard earned money to be entertained or to be moved – I wanted to be so careful that if I was asking for them to invest more, that it better be quality,” Michael says. “Many times I’d been offered different deals where I could just slap my name on something and I just don’t think I had any intention of doing that. So part of saying yes was complete involvement. I wanted autonomy. I really did. I wanted autonomy in all of the decision making and not just creating the fragrance which, you know, I was very lucky they put me together with beautiful perfumers but it was also wanting to sit with the design team to talk about how the packaging would look, and I mean everything, not just the bottle, the boxes, the name, all of it.”

And from the name (which Michael loved because of its sense of inclusivity) to the gold-hued bottle, we think he did a bang-up job. It’s a floral and fruity number that features notes of rose and peony and is warmed up with some sandalwood and vanilla. (And if you haven’t given it a whiff yet, we suggest you get on that ASAP.)

His new By Invitation Peony Noir fragrance…

By Invitation Peony Noir is Michael’s latest scent and it’s the most alluring one yet. The sweet and signature ‘By Invitation’ range trio of rose, peony and vanilla gets a heady edge thanks to notes of black coffee, cedarwood and patchouli. It’s sexy, feminine and really fun.

And how does Michael feel about adding a fourth fragrance to the family?

“It’s ridiculous, it’s completely ridiculous. I still don’t think I’m used to the fact that this is all happening,” he says. “Listen, I’m a hockey playin’, dorky guy and I just think I never could have imagined in my life that I would have this really incredibly beautiful, elegant, sophisticated line of fragrances…You know, I think I have an ego about it.”

And with scents that good, we reckon he should definitely have an ego about it.

Fancy peony perfumes? beautyheaven also loves Chi Chi Peony Eau de Parfum and Jo Malone Peony & Blush Suede Cologne.

Returning to music…

After his son Noah was diagnosed with cancer, Michael took a two-year break from music and the public life to spend time with his family. But now he’s back and has a new studio album, ❤ (pronounced love) coming out on November 16. And what can fans expect from his tenth studio album?

“The truth. The truth is, like so many people, my family and I have gone through some tough times and the truth is I just, I had no room, I had room for nothing in my heart but love. And I really wanted to do something that was beautiful and kind. I just put everything I had, it was therapy for me, to be honest with you. I put everything I had into making an honest, beautiful record that is very true to the roots of who I am and what I’ve done and my essence and it’s probably going to sound a little Kanye, but I think I might have made one of the greatest records of its kind. And I mean it. Something that should stand up to the albums of my heroes.”

Among new versions of standards and a duet with Cecile McLorin Salvant, the album also features an original song that Michael penned called ‘Forever Now’.

“I wrote it, obviously, about partly my experience but I think everything I write, I want for the listener to be able to interpret it in their own way. And so I think I wrote it about the unconditional love of caring. And not just about children, but it could be about for you if you don’t have kids if you have pets, something that you’re sentimental about where you celebrate this passage of time. I really feel that one of the greatest things you could ever do is teach someone that they deserve to be loved and teach them that they can also love and I think that’s what the song was about. I really wanted it to be about the – god it sounds like an Elton John song – but the circle of love.”

Michael Bublé’s new By Invitation Peony Noir fragrance is available exclusively at Chemist Warehouse, My Chemist and My Beauty Spot nationwide, starting at $29.99 for 30mL EDP.
