How-to: choose a perfume for your man
Every fragrance I buy for my man inevitably ends up in the back of the wardrobe. He’s not really one to fuss over his grooming and I’m pretty sure his idea of smelling good involves actually using soap in the shower every so often.
Recently, I tried an alternative approach and bought him a men’s perfumed body wash that had a much woodier scent than the previous fragrances I had bought for him. Finally, I hit upon success!
You see, what us girls think is perfectly sniffer-eriffic, isn’t always in line with our man’s personality. It’s also important to keep in mind that just like my fussy bloke, many men have an aversion to spraying on a fragrance every morning, because: ‘it just doesn’t feel right’ as my hubby would say. So it’s time to broaden your perspective and look at other products on the market that come in more ‘man-friendly’ packaging – like solid perfume sticks, aftershave balms and scented bodywash. Check out our recommendations to find your man’s perfect ‘scent personality’…
If your guy is a total techno-nut, can’t live without his game console and camped out for the release of the new iPad, his scent personality is geek chic. Popular geek guys include Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe and Spiderman hottie Tobey Maguire.
To compliment his quirky style and love of all things cool and gadget-like, go for a really unique scent in an innovative package. We love Marc Jacobs Bang for it’s crazy futuristic-style bottle and unexpected peppery scent.
If your man has model good looks, works a suit like he was born in it and has the ability to charm the pants off of just about anyone, his scent personality is Mr. Smooth. Well known Mr. Smooth’s include James Bond’s brooding Daniel Craig and Mad Men super-hunk Jon Hamm.
The best perfume for a Mr. Smooth is one that’s strong, stylish and bold. Opt for tough masculine scents with a creamy finish, like Playboy’s Play it Sexy, with its tough woody notes, finished off by a smooth vanilla scent.
The ‘bloke’ is a man’s man – he’s tough, rugged, loves the outdoors and isn’t afraid of hard manual labour. Popular ‘bloke’ guys include Aussie hotties Eric Bana and Hugh Jackman. The best perfume for men that fit this scent personality is a non-traditional one. Blokey guys aren’t big on keeping their perfume collections up to date, so instead opt for something more practical, like Blue Stratos After Shave Balm - that he can slap on after a shave for a clean, light scent.
The metro man
The metro man is in touch with his sensitive side, owns at least three pairs of skinny jeans and often spends more time in front of the mirror than you do. Well-known metro men include trend-setter Brad Pitt and fashion-forward David Beckham. A metro man will appreciate a sleekly packaged cologne with a distinctive scent, so opt for cool, cutting-edge fragrances like Marc Jacobs Men and Shiseido Zen for Men Eau de Toilette.
