Watch out for the waddle…

Oh dear, the duck waddle is here! And you can add it to the long list of pregnancy-related phenomenons that nobody cares to warn you about pre-pregnancy. Shame on them!
I’m beginning to wonder if there exists a universal unwritten rule that forbids mothers from revealing the realities of pregnancy with mums-to-be. Or maybe we have Mother Nature to blame: she has an uncanny way of enabling us to forget any less than enjoyable experiences such as labor pains, piles and all the other aches and pains that go hand in hand with pregnancy.
So only the pregnant pretties will know what I mean when I say I’ve been waiting in gloomy anticipation for the day that I can no longer walk my usual walk – instead having to waddle like a duck at a pregnant pace. It’s partway between an aged amble and a torn-muscle totter – what it’s not is graceful and it’s only going to get worse (I have a glum face right now that even the ‘pregnancy glow’ can’t counteract!).
Ladies, be warned: I’m breaking the unwritten rule to reveal that by the time you hit seven-months-pregnant you can forget about a sexy stride. Instead you’ll have to settle for the well-known waddle. And the only tip I can give you – which won’t prevent but will lessen an attack of the quacks – is to say don’t put off a comfort break (a posh way of saying a trip to the loo). The result of a full bladder and a bub in the belly is a very unladylike lurch, which far exceeds the duck waddle. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!
Are you willing to share a pregnancy secret?

Suprisingly when my sister was pregnant, she walked like she normally did. A lot of people mentioned they wouldn't have known she was pregnant from behind! lol

I adore being pregnant even if I do have to waddle slightly for the last few months.

haha the waddle. when u find out your pregnant i think you deliberately forget the bad stuff until ur about 12/ 13 weeks when reality comes crashing down and u know the only way that baby is coming out is not going to be pleasant LOL. i always make sure i tell people how "great" pregnancy is, but i only offer my opinions after the first trimester LOL

Oh the joys of pregnacy, I tried to find the time to walk/waddle as much as possible on a daily basis, even if it was the last thing I felt like, my hands and ankles would swell but the daily exercise definately helped me in the end with my labour, I had a ten year gap between my babies, I think it took that long to get over the first one :), but second time round I also did yoga, I loved it, I would do a class after work in the evenings, I found that it was a good time for me to connect with myself and my baby, and I was, again doing something good for my body, knowing I was preparing for the labour.

Not planning on becoming a mother any time soon, but I have so much admiration for all the mothers out there, particularly my best friend who is due to have her third and is just 23, she is a super mum! All the best Leanne, hope it goes smoothly for you :)

GREAT ARTICLE ! BRILLIANT! I'm just on my 29th week now (aka 7 months) and have definitely started the "Preggo waddle". I feel like humming that tune "baby elephant walk" everytime I have to go somewhere. While I haven't put on a ton of weight the change in gravity is quite something. And the little bubs seems to have his foot or arm on my bladder like a revhead with his foot on the accelerator - everytime I sit down he hits the gas! I have just attempted to paint my toenails which would have looked hilarious if anyone had have seen it - next time I'll leave it to the pro's. Congrats on your pregnancy Leanne - keep the articles coming - its making me laugh to know others have the same issues as moi'.

Waddle? This is nothing! Tell them about the thick leg hair, expecially round the ankles. Facial pigmentation is also well known. Not to mention too big to eat anymore. Just pack the bag.....

Congratulations on your pregnancy Leanne! From my own experience I know that I should of listened to others when they told me to put my feet up and get as much rest as you can before the birth because after bub arrives you are going to be very very tired! I used to put a pillow under my back or side to try and get a comfortable sleep without the bump getting in the way. Spoiling yourself to a pedicure will make you feel great. The last few months I lived in my thongs and wore them to work. Thankfully my job attire wasn't too corporate!

I haven't any secrets to share, my only pearls of wisdom here would be that good things come to those who wait and all the stress, strain & discomfort that may be plaguing you along the way will be worth the end result :)

LOL great article leanne - I have two children my youngest is 5mths old. I remember the waddle, great way to take your time and not have to rush anywhere.........The worst for me was the tiredness that I got from about 8mths couldn't walk for more than like 5 mins!! But it meant I got to put my feet up and rest, rest, rest!!

I remember the waddle only too well, lol. Not to mention the swollen, puffy feel from the excess load you are carrying around. Get a good foot soak happening, and try to keep those legs elevated when you get the chance, it is allowed when you are pregnant to pop your feet up on the desk once in a while, hehe ;)

People expect us to rave about how after seeing our babies everything we've been through doesn't matter anymore and all our pains are worth it. If we so much as whinge about it, some people start to think we have no maternal instinct. Nobody told me about the chloasma and oedema. Those were my biggest pet peeves during pregnancy.

I only just gave birth 3 weeks ago so I can remember pregnancy and birth oh so well... Terrible iron levels, hormones, hiding my head in embarrassment as i mention yes piles, gassy, weak bladder, ducky waddle, rolling around like a beach whale to get out of bed :P oh and the terrible wait is just the worst........ I feel for you leanne but its all worth it when you have bubs :) The labour though truly is not as bad...... I can remember most of the labour and birth (although a little cloudy due to the gas :P) and it was all over so quick and now i have my beautiful little girl :) good luck :) xx
