Australia's top baby names

Choosing a name for your baby isn’t a flippant decision. Unlike what muffin to order at the cafe, it should be a thoroughly discussed, well thought-out plan - and one that carefully considers all possible (and some cringe-worthy) nicknames.
If you’ve got a little one on the way, first of all, congrats! The hard part’s (almost) over! Then comes the fun: choosing a name. It seems us Aussies adore classic names. Much like the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, we love the name Charlotte, with it coming in hot at number two out of 100 according to data sourced from the Births, Deaths and Marriages offices from each state and territory around the country.
Oliver took out the top boys’ spot for the third year in a row, and there will be plenty of Olivias running around the playground in a few years’ time. Hey, at least we’re consistent!
So without further ado, here are Australia’s top 20 baby names for boys and girls. And guys, though it’s not listed, feel free to use ‘Astrid’ - we predict it’ll be huge come 2016.

You have to take into consideration what the child's surname is going to be. I remember one poor boy suffering taunts while I was young at school. His name was Duncan Rose. The kids used to sing......dung can make the roses grow.............Duncan Rose..........not that I used to sing it.:-/

I generally only like non popular names. But it's interesting to see how names become popular for a few years only to drop off the radar afterwards. My daughter's name isn't on the list, whereas my first son's name is at number 7 and my newborn son's also not on the list. I love more old fashioned names, and traditional names with a modern twist.

I remember my daughter's name soaring to top spot on the girls list, 10 years after she was born. And at the time, my MIL mentioning she liked the 'old fashioned' name we'd chosen, haha, it ended up so popular. She's turning 25 next week, and Hannah is still a fairly popular name, back in 1990 it definitely wasn't!
For my boys, one has a name that is unusual (but he really likes it!), and my youngest has a name I'd loved for a long time that isn't too common either.

We named our little man Tyran after the dinosaur Tyrannosaurus. His daddy loves dinosaurs and i loved the "ty" names so it worked out well. Our little T-rex is now already 3 months old.

I always chose names that were different because mine was so common at school there were 3 of us on one class!

I'm kind of surprised how traditional most of these names are

I would not have guessed matilda... A lot of these names don't seem that popular, but then some do. I will definitely be at a loss when naming a baby comes around for me.

I haven't had the opportunity of choosing names because I don't have children. If I did, I would choose something that was not old-fashioned or traditional, but also nothing too weird.

I'm surprised Abigail is not on the list of girls names. A few people I know in the last couple of years have chosen it. At first I didn't like it but it's grown on me.
My name is never going to be on one of these lists. Thankfully. I doubt that I'll have children now but it's unlikely that I'd pick a particularly popular name. I was going to have a little boy a decade or so ago and his name would have been Dylan (after Bob Dylan).

I love most of those names! Its so hard to choose something unique yet classy. When we chose our daughters name we knew of no others and now we've come across about 10! Currently pregnant with number 2 and struggling to find a great name we can agree on.

I agree Jess. We chose Lila for our first born and had never heard of it. It seems to be very popular as it turns out. Cameron for our second is not so popular lately so I am happy with that
