How-to clean bub’s bottom

So this may seem like an obvious topic to write about – you just clean it with a baby wipe and pop a nappy on, right? Mmn, wrong!

Okay, yes, sometimes all that’s required is a quick mop with a baby wipe, plonk the nappy on and job done but there are better ways to clean your baby’s bottom and a few little guidelines that can help prevent nappy rash and sore bottoms.

Changing your very first nappy can be a daunting experience. But with a little bit of practice you’ll soon become a pro and be able to do it with your eyes closed (perfect for those 3am wet-nappy-wake-up calls!).

Make sure you have all the items you need before you put your baby on the change table. That way you’ll never be tempted to leave your baby unattended (big no, no!) while you dash to grab the wipes.

I tend to lay my baby on a towel or muslin so that he doesn’t squirm and wriggle from the cold change-table surface.
Open up the clean nappy and put within reach.  Then open the side flaps of the nappy the baby is wearing and pull the front flap down towards you. At this stage I usually move to the side so that there’s no chance of getting weed on!

Lift your baby’s bottom up by pulling the legs up by the ankles. Keep a firm grip but not too tight. Using a bay wipe or damp cotton wool, wipe the baby’s bottom from front to back. This lessens the chance of infection. Make sure you check all the skin folds and if your child is male, clean under and around the penis.

Don’t leave your baby with a wet bottom. If need be dry its bottom with a towel or add a little baby powder. If there’s any sign of redness smooth a barrier cream over the skin to help prevent nappy rash.

Place any soiled wipes or cotton wool into the dirty nappy, fold the nappy up and pull it out from under your baby. Grab the clean nappy and lay this under the baby.

Lower bub onto the clean nappy and quickly pull up the flaps, secure and voila!

Make sure you wash your hands!
