Preparing for your daughter's first period
As a Mum who started her family quite young I found myself navigating the challenges of having children without too many of my peers with which to compare notes.
Now I am in the position that those friends are coming to ask my advice on how to deal with various issues that they are facing as their children are growing into adolescents.
Questions such as "What type of skincare should my teenager use?", "When is the right time to allow my daughter to shave her legs?" and one of the most common is "How do I deal with my daughters first period?"
With this in mind I have prepared a Period preparation pack, which I believe is an important step in being ready for when the time comes.
Not only is it important to have all of the necessary items available, your daughter may have lots of questions that she would like answered.
We are very fortunate as parents that there are so many fabulous resources available for young teenagers now and I have included some of the links here:
There are even calendars on the Internet which enable her to predict when her next period is due.
Often we take for granted the access that we have to everyday items such as sanitary products. Moxie have teamed up with AFRI pads to help supply Ugandan schoolgirls with ‘Deluxe Menstrual kits’ so that they do not have to resort to using rags, newspaper and leaves instead of sanitary products. You can learn more here.
Lastly, one of the most important things that I tell my friends is to keep the lines of communication open. Let your daughter know that she can come to talk to you about any concerns that she may have and that the door is always open for her.
Are there any other items that you would you include in your Period Preparation Pack? How did your Mum help you prepare for your first period?
