The best ever tips for travelling with a baby

The truth? Travelling with a baby is not without its challenges. Between the time differences, mood swings, dirty nappies and feeding, there’s a lot more work than relaxation going on. And while flying with an infant may seem like a daunting task for new parents, with a little preparation, your first flight with your little one can be a totally manageable (and dare we say, fun) experience for the whole family.

Consider flight times
While it might be cheaper to fly later in the day, if your baby tends to get a little tired and grumpy in the afternoon, it’s worth paying that little bit extra to have a fuss-free flight.
Arrive Early
As you’ve probably already learned, everything takes just that little bit longer with a baby in tow. Avoid the stress of rushing to your gate (or even worse, missing your flight!) by allowing plenty of time to get to the airport, through security and to your gate.
Carry snacks
Feed your baby during take-off and landing, as this prevents their ears from popping and provides a distraction. Some airlines provide baby meals, which you can request during your booking. However, you should always carry snacks that you know you’re baby will enjoy, especially if they have allergies. Similarly, it’s important to ensure your baby stays hydrated throughout the flight.
Baggage allowance
Babies come with a lot of baggage - strollers, capsules, nappies, bottles - so it’s important to check what you can and can’t take on the plane. This may vary between airlines, so always check each individual site before arriving at the airport. And don’t forget to consider domestic versus international liquid limits!
Carry-On Is Essential
(Obviously). Only don't forget that you'll need more nappies packed into that bag than just the length of the flight. Don't forget to factor in getting to the airport, waiting at the airport and travelling to your final destination as well. Your new mantra? ALWAYS OVERPACK. If you think you'll be safe with fice nappies, add another two or three. Next, make sure you're well stocked with baby wipes, sanitary wipes a change of clothing for your baby and an extra top for yourself. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best!
Climate Control
Plans can be icy cold or stuffy and warm (read: never the right temperature). Make sure your babe is prepared for anything by dressing him/her in layers. Don't forget things like socks, and of course, their favourite blanket.

Conversely on my trip to Scotland last year, a lady was travelling on the same flights to Ireland alone with her baby. The little boy was having a very hard time and she was doing her best but she couldn't even get a bite to eat. Everyone around her took turns so she could eat, go to the bathroom and have a break (including the flight staff). Sometimes it takes a village. And yes, you bet your bottom dollar I was helping with the bub x

Aww that's so sweet, most times on long haul I've just seen them getting dirty looks and being ignored :(

This is so beautiful TUD.
Now I have my own baby I completely understand babies can cry for no reason and there may be nothing their parents can do. Sometimes giving mine attention would make her cry even louder

It was the most wonderful thing I have ever seen on the flight. Honestly, this lady (I cannot believe I've forgotten her name) was so unbelievably grateful. I know as a childless woman, I can take for granted the freedom to (dare I say) pee, but she couldn't get up without going with her child. So her son and I would play on the play mat (thank goodness we had a wing row), and she would get breaks, and others sitting near us would take turns. It was the best thing ever.

Oh God that's the worst! I travelled from LA to Sydney, a 14 hour flight and there were two twin babies who cried throughout the whole flight. It was a nightmare...

I've traveled with babies and no problems if you do a bit of forward planning. Find out airline policy with bassinet and stroller hire (first come first served so be quick!) also don't forget infant formula restrictions with liquids, don't make baby formula just put pre measured powder in bottle and get boiled water on plane.

Yes great tips for travelling with an infant. With our sons first flight overseas I was told to make sure that I had heaps of snacks and colouring books etc. This was really great advice, and our holiday went without a hitch, except for a few tantrums here and there.

I've travelled a lot with children. Babies are easy, it's the toddlers that are tough. One thing I wish parents would remember is that other children are not there to entertain their child - that's mom and dad's job. I can't even begin to count the number of times my children were in their seat, quietly enjoying a movie or some other activity when the child behind us wanted to play and mom and dad were actually encouraging their child to disrupt mine so they didn't have to deal with their own kid. Pack a portable DVD player, a tablet or games and plan on settling in for some fun one-on-one time with your little explorer. Families have it tough enough when travelling without being expected to entertain other people's kids as well as their own.
