The best ever tips for travelling with a baby

The truth? Travelling with a baby is not without its challenges. Between the time differences, mood swings, dirty nappies and feeding, there’s a lot more work than relaxation going on. And while flying with an infant may seem like a daunting task for new parents, with a little preparation, your first flight with your little one can be a totally manageable (and dare we say, fun) experience for the whole family.

Consider flight times
While it might be cheaper to fly later in the day, if your baby tends to get a little tired and grumpy in the afternoon, it’s worth paying that little bit extra to have a fuss-free flight.
Arrive Early
As you’ve probably already learned, everything takes just that little bit longer with a baby in tow. Avoid the stress of rushing to your gate (or even worse, missing your flight!) by allowing plenty of time to get to the airport, through security and to your gate.
Carry snacks
Feed your baby during take-off and landing, as this prevents their ears from popping and provides a distraction. Some airlines provide baby meals, which you can request during your booking. However, you should always carry snacks that you know you’re baby will enjoy, especially if they have allergies. Similarly, it’s important to ensure your baby stays hydrated throughout the flight.
Baggage allowance
Babies come with a lot of baggage - strollers, capsules, nappies, bottles - so it’s important to check what you can and can’t take on the plane. This may vary between airlines, so always check each individual site before arriving at the airport. And don’t forget to consider domestic versus international liquid limits!
Carry-On Is Essential
(Obviously). Only don't forget that you'll need more nappies packed into that bag than just the length of the flight. Don't forget to factor in getting to the airport, waiting at the airport and travelling to your final destination as well. Your new mantra? ALWAYS OVERPACK. If you think you'll be safe with fice nappies, add another two or three. Next, make sure you're well stocked with baby wipes, sanitary wipes a change of clothing for your baby and an extra top for yourself. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best!
Climate Control
Plans can be icy cold or stuffy and warm (read: never the right temperature). Make sure your babe is prepared for anything by dressing him/her in layers. Don't forget things like socks, and of course, their favourite blanket.

I actually find you get through airports quicker when you have kids! In both LA and Bali we had security bump us to the front of the immigration queue!
Some people tell you to wear your children out so they 'sleep' on the flight, my personal experience is keeping them well rested and full is better as my kids anyway are less likely to have a tantrum vs when they are overtired. It's also very stimulating for children and a whole new environment,
there is a time and a place for DVD/tablets and on flights is definitely one I don't mind my kids using.

I have just cancelled organising, shopping for, packing for, searching for and booking 'fitting' accommodation for our family holiday - and that's now when they're bigger and older. It was just too much this time round - organising the cats & dog etc as well on top of everything. I find a real holiday for me is just with one of the older one's or just my hubby - much more relaxing and I know the pets are taken care of well too. When they were little it was even less 'relaxing' and more work. I'm glad they grow up! : )

Great tips, I have a toddler and I travel a lot with little babies. It is really very difficult to travel with little ones.

When they are small, they it seems to be ok. They just sleep, eat and poop. Heaps of diapers, food and that is it.

I definitely agree with flight times when travelling with toddlers. Babies are generally easier then toddlers or young children. I used to travel at night when my child was younger.

I've been flying this year with my little man and I agree with some of those tips, overpack overpack overpack! And the iPad with some newly downloaded tv shows or movies are also a lifesaver

Little babies, are much easier to travel with than a toddler. Holy moly, talk about stressful. They never want to sit still in the chair. Very difficult on long hauls.

Some great tips!! It's been a while since I've had to travel with a baby, but I remember the struggle of making sure I had enough of everything!
I know with miss 7 the iPad and DVD player is always a big win! Song with plenty of snack and fresh water!
Also nice to have a refresher, with pending plans for Bub number 2!

I was once seated in the front seat of a crying baby on a flight from Seattle to Long Beach, CA. The baby cried throughout the flight and the mom did nothing to sooth her baby (I could see them through the space between seats). Now I travel with ear plugs just in case.
