Negative-space eye makeup is the latest beauty trend

Awards season always sees our favourite celebrities bring out bold red carpet looks, which often spark major trends in the beauty world. This year was no different – we first saw a big resurgence of hair accessories and now beauty lovers are obsessing over negative-space eye makeup, seen on the likes of Emma Watson, Lily Collins and Zoe Kravitz.

So what is negative-space eye makeup? Put simply, it’s an edgy little technique where the skin is left bare on certain areas of the eye while the surrounding area is filled in with makeup.

Now I know what you’re thinking – it’s hard enough to master the plain ol’ winged eyeliner look, so why would anyone want to attempt this new trend? But I promise it’s not as technical as it sounds!

All you need to do is grab a some striping tape (or possibly even some very carefully applied adhesive tape) and cut it into the shape you desire. You then apply it gently to the skin, doing your eye makeup as usual before peeling the tape off to reveal the finished look. Voila!

Not sure what shape to try? We’ve rounded up some killer inspo to help you get started.
