Make-up myths busted

Celebrity make-up artist, Peita Gregory, is the go-to for many international fashion luminaries such as Agyness Deyn, Alexa Chung, Yasmin Le Bon and Lily Cole, so there’s no denying her beauty know-how is second to none.

We put forward a few common cosmetic myths, mysteries and misconceptions and asked Gregory to give us the lowdown of what’s right and what’s wrong.

#1 You should always buy a concealer one shade lighter than your natural skin tone.

Gregory advises: “When buying a concealer many women make the mistake of buying one in a lighter shade than their skin tone. Don’t do this…it will only highlight what you’re trying to disguise. Instead use a concealer in the exact same shade as your skin as this will do a much better job in covering your spots, marks or under eye area. A general rule is to use a liquid formula for the area around the eyes and something creamier or harder in texture for use on spots and general marks on the face. Gently tap in the product around your eyes with your fingers this will warm the concealer and help it set. If covering a spot/pimple use a synthetic brush to apply the concealer and blend so you don’t see where it’s been placed.”

# 2 Bronzer is ideal for creating a ‘just-returned-from-Bali’ radiance

Bronzer warms the skin and makes skin appear healthy if used in the right way, but you don’t need to overdo it like so many do,” stresses Gregory. “Use a dusting of matte bronzer (in the right shade for your skin) during the day as a matte one looks more natural and flattering for daytime wear. If you like a bit of a shine, choose a bronzer that contains shimmering particles.”

#3 How exactly do I use illuminator?

Illuminator can really bring out features and enhance your skin in no time flat,” says Gregory. “A little placed on the top of your cheek bones will highlight your cheeks, some placed on the cupids bow of your lips will make them look fuller, and some mixed in with your foundation will add a halo effect to your skin. Used in the right way illuminator can be your best friend!”

#4 Face powder will make me look like my grandma

“So many women don’t use a face powder simply because they think it will have a dulling effect on their foundation and make their skin look cakey. This is not true….there are many brands that carry fantastic textures now that are so finely milled you would have a hard time guessing if someone is wearing a powder or not,” says Gregory.

“After applying your foundation or even tinted moisturiser, sweep or press some powder over your t-zone to set your make-up and help the longevity of your foundation.”
