Tom Ford’s tips for looking good on a video call

If you’re like us, sometimes a morning Zoom call is the first time we’ll have seen our reflection for the day. And you bet it can definitely give us a bit of a fright.

Thankfully, the COVID-19 hero we never knew we needed, Tom Ford, has risen up and provided the crucial information we were all craving during this testing time.

When Maureen Dowd, a journalist for the New York Times, was preparing for her FaceTime interview with Larry David, she reached out to Tom Ford for some tips on how to look her best. And he definitely did not disappoint.

Here’s the list Tom shared, and the best part is, it requires hardly any makeup:

  1. Put the computer on a stack of books so the camera is slightly higher than your head (about the top of your head, to be specific)
  2. Point computer down into your eyes
  3. Take a tall lamp and set it next to the computer on the side of your face you feel is best
  4. Make sure the lamp is in line with and slightly behind the computer, so the light falls nicely onto your face
  5. Put a piece of paper or a white tablecloth on the table (make sure you can’t see it in the frame). This will give you a bit of fill and bounce
  6. And, lots of powder, et voila!

Alright everyone, you heard it here first. Dust off the white tablecloth, stack the books high and rise from those stuck at home, lack of sunshine and social interaction ashes!

  1. I think most of us are now complacent and getting used to a no make up day, especially if you are not going anywhere, just angle the camera so it doesn’t look up your nose.

  2. This was very helpful but luckily I don’t have to worry too much about it.

I meet with a group weekly on zoom and we try and be as if we are meeting in person. I’m getting more used to it but I will be glad when this virus thing is over.
