Shonagh in the City: day four

Shonagh in the City: day four

It’s true. New York never sleeps. I have the dark circles to prove it.

Yesterday we were off to New Jersey at 6.30am to tour the Maybelline New York laboratories. It was a real treat, watching scientists mix pigments and test packaging, ensuring what we put on our lips and lashes is perfect. ӬAfter the tour, we hightailed it back to the city for a backstage peek at Michael Angel. Michael is a Melbourne designer/stylist taking the Big Apple by storm. His latest collection focuses on felts, in grey and Schiaparelly pink, teamed with delicate silks and crushed Swarovski crystals.

In keeping with the collection’s polished elegance, Charlotte Willer kept faces fresh, with long lashes and perfectly groomed brows. Contrasted against the neutral canvas were shockingly pink lips, painted with Maybelline New York’s Superstay Lipcolour in Raspberry. It totally worked (see right).

The models entered an art space and stood for two hours in an illuminated triangle. We could walk around them, looking at the clothes, even feeling fabrics if we wanted. Showing the collection this way is called a presentation (rather than a show, where models stride down the runway) and it has such impact.

Then, off to Erin Wasson/RVCA. This time, Charlotte Willer got edgy, with bronzed faces and fierce eyeliner. Hint:Maybelline New York Line Stylist Eyeliner in Black delivers the look.

The penthouse studio space was awesome, with a deck looking out over the Hudson River. There was a bar at one end and a stage in the middle. Behind it, projected onto white walls, were flashing images of Erin Wasson. Suddenly, a string of models with impossibly long legs and just-woke-up hair stepped on stage in the edgiest, sexiest clothes we’ve seen since Sass and Bide entered our lives.

Then, it was time to go home; we could barely keep our eyes open. As the elevator doors opened, we came face to face with Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester, who happily posed for a picture and gave me a quick hug. Star struck? Me? Maybe just a little…

xoxo
