Is the vinyl lip making a comeback?

Is the vinyl lip making a comeback?

Glossy eyes have been dominating our Instagram feeds for months, and while the shiny, wet-look lids may appear downright delicious, the slip ‘n slide trend can be a little tricky to pull off in real life.

But what can’t be done on the eyes, can always be done on the lips and it seems high-shine vinyl is coming back in a big way via ultra-glossy pouts.

At Chanel’s 2020 Cruise Collection show in Paris, models lips were drenched in a gothic black lacquer that was equal parts dramatic and chic. While at Ryan Lo’s SS19 show, makeup artist Miranda Joyce created a ruby red lip so wet it looked almost poisonous. The shade was none-other than M.A.C’s iconic ‘Ruby Woo’ layered over with a gloss.

Since then, we’ve seen new lip launches from NARS, Revlon, Giorgio Armani and Tom Ford that combine bold colour with a mirrored-finish in one swipe. Making the high fashion trend more convenient and wearable IRL.

And while the finish of a vinyl lip may look sticky as hell, the formulas have come a long way in terms of glossy comfort (although we’d still advise not stepping out with loose hair on a windy day).

Intrigued enough to try it? Here’s a few tips to consider.

1. Exfoliate and prep

Always start by giving your lips a gentle scrub to start, removing any dead skin. If you don’t have a lip-friendly scrub, a spare toothbrush always does the trick. Follow with a nourishing lip balm or primer.

2.  Use a liner to make it last

For a crisp edge and long-wearing colour, start with a liner first. Pick one that matches your final lip colour, or use an invisible one. Trace the edges of your lips and then colour in the centre for extra staying power.

3. Apply your vinyl lip lacquer

These types of products pack a punch, so apply sparingly, staring with the bottom lip first. Then pucker before filling in what’s left on the top lip.

Hot tip: You can also give any opaque matte lip colour a vinyl-like finish by applying a gloss like Rimmel’s Oh My Gloss! In Crystal Clear over the top.

  1. The Ruby Woo lips look amazing. The dark lips, don’t do it for me.
I honestly love the look of a highly lacquered lip but think that in day to day life it means leaving sticky prints on cup, getting sticky bits in your hair and then sticky hands from pulling those strands off your lips.
