Lip gloss returns as a beauty trend

Is it just me or is everything that was big in the 90s suddenly on-trend again?
Brown lipstick came back in a big way, chokers became the must-have accessory and now it’s been predicted by make-up artists that lip gloss will be making its return in 2016.
So who’s ready to dust off their favourite M.A.C Lipglass and get their high-shine pout on?
Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande certainly are, after they both included a Lipglass in each of their collections with M.A.C.

If you’re an avid lipstick lover (like myself) I know you’re probably thinking that you’re going to give the shimmery, slippery lip product a miss - but don’t be so quick to dismiss it.
I’m the first one to admit that when I think of lip gloss, it’s more in a nostalgic sense; pulling the tube out of my off-the-shoulder backpack, applying a nice thick coat so I could taste the watermelon flavour and then elegantly getting my hair stuck in it as soon as the wind picked up.
BUT while it may have that 90s feel about it, the way we’ll be wearing it will be much different.

The runway, as always, shows us exactly how it’s done - and there’s nothing glittery or fruity-flavoured about it. It’s more of a muted gloss; clear, no shimmer, just lips that look deliciously wet.
Emilio Pucci
Fendi
Diane Von Furstenburg
Dolce & Gabbana
As for the formulas? You can expect those to be different too.
"The new formulas are a lot easier to work with and wear than the tacky, full-on lip glosses of the past. The precise applicators and smooth texture of the new generation of glosses makes them super easy to manipulate and build upon," says make-up artist Suzy Gerstein.
Celebrities are certainly jumping on the bandwagon, with a few recently stepping out on the red carpet with gloss-covered lips.
So if you too are ready to welcome gloss back with open arms, here are our top picks to put on your wish list for the perfect ‘wet’ look:
- Bobbi Brown Crystal Lip Gloss
- Burt's Bees Lip Shine
- Shanga Lip Gloss in Crystal
- Paula's Choice RESIST Anti-Aging Lip Gloss SPF 40
- 100% Pure Pink Caramel Lip Gloss
- Elizabeth Arden Crystal Clear Lip Gloss
And similar to matte-finish lip products, the key to long-wearing, flawless-looking gloss is to prep the lips with a good scrub (like Lush Lip Scrub).
So what do you think? Will lip gloss make a comeback? Do you like the look of the trend so far?

I wasn't aware the glossy pout even went away. Using a gloss highlights the lips as well as moisturising them, providing you are using a good gloss.

I love the glossy lip look. Not a fan of the new Matt lippy's as they make the lips look dry and cracked.

I don't think that this look suits everyone, but it looks great on those who suit it.

Whether it's in trend or not I always wear lip gloss must keep my lips moisturise at all time's. Some of the cheaper one's are really good like Avon I've been using that one for a while now & it has good colour too. Beautiful blonde up top in photo & Kate Hudson is always gorgeous in her photo's.

I love lip gloss and have quite a few. I much prefer a gloss to a matte lipstick.

I like gloss as long as its not too sticky - I hate it if it sticks to my long hair!

I love that Bobbi Brown Crystal Gloss. Super sticky. Stays on forever. I stay away from thin glosses. They only last minutes! Although you'll probably always catch me with a matte red lip.

Gloss is probably much easier to wear than lipstick as it suits even those with thin lips.

I have to admit lip gloss is a product I use quite a lot, I have clear, coloured and tinted gloss. It never went out of trend with me.

Thank gawd for that! I cant stand matt lip shades, or anything flat and dull. Bring the glossy lips ON! :)

I've been getting into glosses lately again, and you're definitely correct about the formulas being much better these days! Gone are the days of the super sticky lip glosses to where your hair gets stuck to them... one of my favourites at the moment is Clarins Instant Lip Perfector :)

I never stopped wearing lip gloss. To me the whole matt lip thing was a re-run of an 80's trend.

I don't think that people ever stopped wearing lip glosses. Companies are always bringing out new formulations.
