How to wear bold lipstick for summer 2019

A bold lipstick is the perfect accessory for the summer months. It’s simple, makes a statement, and can take you from beach-to-bar in minutes. But how do you get a flawless application that lasts for hours? We asked Director of Artistry for Lancôme Australia, Lara Srokowski, to show us how to achieve a flawless bold lipstick look for summer.
So, to find out how to achieve a bold summer lip that’s long-lasting, watch the video below

-
For the first step, Lara recommends preparing the lip with Lancôme Advanced Génifique to help plump and hydrate the lips. Plus, it also helps to adhere any of the product that you apply on top. Pump a small amount on the back of your hands and then tap the product onto your lips with your fingertips.
-
The next step for creating a bold lip is to apply a lip liner. To ensure that the lip is really longwearing, Lara suggests outlining the contours of the lips with the Lancôme Contour Pro Lip Pencil, as well as colouring in the lips too. For a bold, summer lip Lara used the shade 172, which is a bright, red coral.
-
For a fuller looking lip, bite your lips as you apply the lip liner as this allows you to apply the lipliner directly under the natural contour of the lip.
-
Once you’ve finished applying lip liner, it’s time to grab your lipstick. Lara used the Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge Drama Matte Lipstick in the shade Obsessive Red, which is a fresh coral colour. The Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge Drama Matte Lipsticks are extremely matte, but they are formulated with nourishing oils and moisture-boosting Pro-Xylane™ which is great for plumping the lip.
-
Using the brush on the other end of your lip liner, dip the brush straight onto the lipstick and then apply to the lips for a precise application and perfected finish.
Here are a few of our favorite lipstick shades for summer...
Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge Drama Matte Lipstick in Obsessive Red
“The pay off for all shades is amazing. The finish is very subtle and matte, however, a touch of lipgloss and you've got a gorgeous bold lip fit for a great night out. The lipstick itself is very creamy and simply glides on.” - bh member beautylover_23

M.A.C Lipstick in Morange
“Absolutely no regrets buying this! It’s smooth and creamy, no issues applying it and takes minimal time and effort to perfect it. It barely feels like it's there and I didn't have to reapply more than once at night, and it’s great because it doesn't dry out my lips either, it feels very natural” - bh member Angezza

Australis Velourlips in NY-CEE
“I have the Australis Velourlips Matte Lip Cream in NY-CEE, which is a completely gorgeous shade both in the tube and on. The lip colour goes on wet and actually is really moisturising. Then after a few seconds start to dry in these beautiful matte variations of the original colour. It holds super well, staying on throughout my day, whether I'm eating lunch or drinking coffee etc.”- bh member BreeBeautyxo

Coincidentally, Pantone just announced 'Living Coral' as 2019's colour of the year.

I love bold lips all year round. I don't like to stick to the rules of makeup, so it might be 40 degrees but I'm still wearing a dark plum if I feel like it!

I love Lara's hair and the cut. Stunning...
I wouldn't put this serum on my lips. I think this look is too much for summer ...I always think of summer makeup as light, glowing , golden natural not red or dark bright. I like to be more natural...however I'd wear this in winter.

That colour looks so nice on the model but I don't think I'd wear it myself - I'm more of a neutral girl because with my bright yellow blonde hair, strongly yellow toned skin and cool-toned lime green eyes I need to wear something neutral on my lips!

I thought the finished look had a lot of horizontal streaks. I make vertical strokes if I'm using a lippy prone to streaking like this one.

I wear bold lips all day every day. They work for me and give me a healthy look tbh.

Bold lips look too much on me. The only way I can get away with it is if it’s a sheer colour.

Some good tips here! I've never heard of applying a serum to your lips, but I might have to try that next time (although not with the Lancome stuff). My lips are chronically dry regardless of how much lip balm I apply beforehand, so maybe this will help me out.
EDIT: I mucked around at home yesterday & tried that tip using my bottle of The Ordinary's HA + B5 & I have to say it really stopped my lips from drying out. Granted, I also used a matching lip liner with my lippy but still, I think it worked. Will be doing this from now on!

Great tip about using a serum first. I usually use a lip conditioner or balm first but I'll give the serum a go.

Going to try this out - I avoid bright lipstick as I can never do a good job of applying it.

Interesting tips. Wish I’d known about the advanced Génifique BEFORE I finished it.

A lip bush is really helpful for me because my hand is always super shaky when putting on bold lipsticks

Me too, Andrea. I find it help's keep my lips moisturised & less dry from cracking :)

Err no way I’m putting fragrance and denatured alcohol on my lips with that recommended serum! That colour is really pretty though!

A bold lip is normal for me. I find it harder to find the perfect nude shade. I like watching videos with Lara. I’ve seen a couple on YouTube.
