The best and worst beauty trends from the 2000s

Looking back at the beauty trends of the 2000s, it’s easy to see that we’ve all evolved tremendously when it comes to beauty. From shimmery eyeshadow, to frosted lips, and some seriously questionable hair styles. And let’s not forget that THIN, barely there brows were in. It’s hard to believe some of these hair and makeup looks were all on trend back then…

So let’s go back in time and relive some of the biggest beauty moments from the 2000s. Click through the gallery below to reveal our favourite beauty looks.

Frosted lipstick

Let’s start with frosted lips, celebrities loved a little frosting and shimmer in the 2000s. Frosted lipsticks, frosted lip glosses, and even frosted lip balms. This trend was huge back in the day. And it’s actually starting to make a comeback. To make the look work now, ditch the all over shimmer look and keep the rest of your makeup simple.

Lip gloss

Super glossy lips were also a thing! And who could forget Lancôme’s famous Juicy Tubes? We all had at least one flavour of these. Wet, sticky looking lip gloss was all the rage back then, but thankfully the lip gloss formulas of today will give you more of a subtle sheen that won’t have you constantly getting your hair stuck to your lips.

Thin brows

Today it’s all about volume with our brows, but back in the 2000s they were so think you could barely see them. Luckily, this is one trend that is not coming back any time soon. Unfortunately many of us are still dealing with the aftermath of this trend from over plucking our brows. If this is the case for you, the best thing to get your brows back in shape is to put down the tweezers and use an eyebrow growth serum to help to grow your brows back.

Shimmery eyeshadow

Shimmery lips were in and also shimmer eyeshadow! Another trend that’s coming back, and we couldn’t be happier about it. A hint of shimmery eyeshadow can really open up your eye area, but covering your lids in too much frosty shimmer is anything but flattering. The good news is that the shimmery eyeshadow formulas of today are much more finely pigmented, so you can wear a touch of shimmer without it looking OTT.

Fake tan

Thanks to J.Lo we all wanted a deep, bronzed glow. However, back then most of us ended up looking more orange than sun kissed. Since the 2000s fake tan has evolved and not only have the formulas improved, but you can now match your tan to your undertones so that the result is always flattering for your skin tone.

Poker straight hair

We saw some pretty crazy hair trends in the 2000s. One that was especially popular with popstars and actresses was long, slick-straight locks. Unfortunately, just like our brows, our hair suffered as well. Nowadays we’re much more savvy with protecting our hair from heat tools. So we can have super sleek, straight hair without causing damage to our precious strands.

Coloured hair pieces

Who could forget those chunky, coloured clip-in hair pieces? Jessica Simpson sure was a fan. From brightly coloured to jet black, believe it or not they were a popular choice for stars on the red carpet. Hair pieces are definitely still around today, but the goal is to have them blend in with your hair for a natural look rather than to make a statement on their own.

  1. I've never been into fake tan because I've seen too many oompa loompas running around.

Thicker eyebrows are definitely a better look compared to the thin, almost invisible ones.
