While everyone else is busy pulling out jumpers and jackets, we much prefer to update our makeup wardrobe as the season changes. And when it comes to autumn, lipstick shades are where we prefer to play the most.

It’s true there’s nothing like a statement lip to make an outfit truly pop. But the great thing about autumn is that both bold and subtle lipstick shades are fair game.

So whether you’re here for an eye-catching orange or goes-with-everything nude, we’ve got colours to suit every taste and cosy autumn occasion.

Here are the best autumn lipstick shades to wear right now.

#1 Glossy toffee

Trending nudes have certainly become more wearable of late. Gone are the deep cool-toned mattes that require serious precision. Instead, we’re welcoming warmer, caramel tones with a kinder, satin to gloss finish.

Try: Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté Candy Glaze in ’04 Nude Pleasure’ ($64 at David Jones)

#2 Mauve

Mauve is having a moment and we couldn’t be happier. The purple-leaning nude has the scope to look good on everyone but those with yellow undertones will find it particularly flattering.

Try: Rimmel London Lasting Finish Matte Lipstick in ‘Mauve Bliss’ ($16.49 at Chemist Warehouse)

#3 Coral

If your go-to shade is red, consider switching to a slightly more orangey tone to shake things up. Go bright to make a statement or muted to keep it wearable through coffee and snacks.

Try: Bobbi Brown Luxe Defining Lipstick in ‘New Mod’, $60 at Bobbi Brown

#4 Burgundy

Rihanna has always been the queen of the vampy lip. If we had to guess which Fenty shade she’s sporting here, we’d put money on the Icon Lipstick in ‘Board Memb’r’ ($34 at Sephora).

#5 Peach

If you love a monochromatic look, you can’t go wrong with peach on the eyes, cheeks and lips. And if you’ve got blue eyes like Reese, be ready for them to pop.

Try: M.A.C Cosmetics Locked Kiss Ink 24-HR Lipcolour in ‘Teaser’, $54 at M.A.C

#6 Dusty mauve

Want to try a bolder lip without going too bold? A dusty plum shade is the perfect in between. Think of the shade as the lovechild of nude, plum and terracotta. Our pick? Selena Gomez’s go-to: the Rare Beauty Kind Words Lipstick in ‘Gifted’ ($34 at Sephora).

#7 Dusty rose

If you’re after a nude to go with every autumn outfit, a dusty rose is what you’re looking for. The undertone is slightly pink with just a tinge of purple, to create a colour mix that works on just about everybody.

Try: Nude by Nature Moisture Shine Lipstick in ’03 Dusty Rose’, $20.99 at Chemist Warehouse

#8 Stained berry

We know for a fact this stunning lip shade is the CHANEL Rouge Allure L’Extrait Lipstick in ‘868’ ($81 at Myer). But what we love most about this look is the diffused edges that emulate a ‘stained’ effect. Recreate it by concentrating your colour in the centre of the pout, smudging it towards the edges with a lip brush.

  1. I never pay attention to the seasons and simply wear the shades that I feel like wearing that day. At the moment I am wearing a lot of shades from the Nude By Nature range of lipsticks

  2. I love all of these colours except the stained berry – those diffused edges would look like bad application on me (and the price – holy moly – that’s dear). I normally am a sucker for a berry lip but I’m leaning towards the mauves here.
