Red lipstick

So.. i’ve never worn a red lipstick before and now I am interested in trying one out but I’m not sure which drugstore brands I should try. I was thinking of either Maybelline Color Whisper in Who wore it red-er, Bourjois Lip Crayon in Red Sunrise, Revlon lip butter in Candy Apple or Rimmel Apocalips in Stellar. I don’t want to spend too much money on it as I probably wouldn’t wear it too often as I don’t have the confidence to rock a red lippy so I was thinking of getting it from Priceline. I prefer a moisturising/not matte lipstick. I’m also tanned (medium skin tone). Thanks!

If you don’t feel that you have the confidence to wear something really bright out in public, start with just wearing it at home. That way, you get used to seeing yourself with it on and I guarantee you won’t feel so self-conscious when you finally wear it outside.

Thanks, that’s a nice pointer. I am a great fan of nude lipstick and tend to avoid red ones, but I KNOW that the look can be very dramatic. I will try this 🙂

Scray Scray Thank you for your advice! I have similar problems with my lips. So over it!
I’d love a stain that actually stays stained! Perhaps it is just my lips 🙁 I saw that OCC do have a lip primer you’re supposed to use first. That might make a big difference.

Petal The mirenesse ones I’ve tried are Velvet Lift Moisture Shine and 3D Forever Gloss. The colours are great but they don’t last, and the 3D Forever Gloss smells like detergent :/
I’d love to try the Lip Bomb but the colour I want is out of stock.

I’d recommend having fun swatching Rimmel Kate Moss lipsticks. I really like them and there’s a lot of gorgeous reds around.

Thanks Petal! I’ve received quite a few of the mirenesse lip glosses and they are terrible. Smell awful and are really drying. I’m glad the lipsticks are beter!
How much is the Lancôme lippy? Sounds fab!
Loreal Colour Riche isn’t too bad, I guess I’m still looking for ‘the one’. Very tempted to try Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar!

Emma, the Lancôme lipstick is about $49! Maybe test some of them out in the store to see if you think they’re worth the expense. I’m sorry you don’t like the Mirenesse lip glosses. Which ones did you try? I’ve had great success with them.

As for the OCC Lip Tars, I have quite a few of them and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them! They are a bit fiddly because you have to apply them with a smalll lip brush, but they are worth it due to their longevity, fantastic pigment, and versatility (ability to mix shades). Just remember to only apply a small dot of them to your lips. People can have problems with them if they use too much of the product.

As a makeup artist and National Educator for jane iredale I recommend our PureMoist Lip Colour in “Carrie”, it’s long lasting pure pigment!

OCC Lip Tars are pretty awesome. The little brush included with them works well. Keep in mind that you really do need some sort of brush to apply them, and for additional touch ups as well. I’m not a huge fan because, although my lips are smooth, they are generally dry (no matter what I do, sigh) and the lip tars bring up every little dry bit imaginable. If I exfoliate thoroughly beforehand and make sure I’ve had lip balm on constantly, they work. I’ve had no problems applying Lip Tars over lip balm, but found that when I applied balm over the Lip Tar (as in reverse), it messed it all up, the formula just wouldn’t gel anymore and starting over is all I could do to save it. I’ve tried with a dozen different lip balms/products which all had the same result. On their own, the lip tars are quite well wearing and last a decent amount of time. They are in no way a stain though, and rub off quite easily. For reference, my experience comes from the shade ‘Annika’. I found that it applied quite streaky, and needed to be blotted down and powdered to last longer and look smoother. I hope this helps!

Oh I hate it when lipsticks massively dry out your lips! I still haven’t found one that lasts that doesn’t do this!
Def match the red lippy with a red lipliner x

Emma, I can recommend an expensive red lipstick that lasts. Sorry it’s not cheaper, but it’s one by Lancome. I only recently discovered it and it was love at first sight. It is Le Rouge Absolu (or L’absolu Rouge) in shades 132 and 133. They are both true reds, but I’m going to keep the one that is more blue-based. I was planning on giving the other to a dear friend as a gift, but a part of me is tempted to keep it. The lipstick feels moist on my lips but still lasts a few hours which is really good for me. It’s a wearable red for the day and not too intense.

I also recommend lipsticks by Max Factor and L’oreal – brands that to me are halfway between budget and high end with great quality. If you can get a Mirenesse lipstick on sale, I also recommend them for quality.

So i went to Priceline today and swatched heaps of lipsticks and decided to get revlon lip butters in Candy Apple since i thought getting used to an orangey red would be easier than a proper red lip. It looked pretty when i swatched it so I’ll just have to try it on now, fingers crossed it looks fine 😀 I tried on Stellar but it was way too neon on me and Maybelline Color whispers in who wore it red-er is actually fuchsia so no idea why they sell it as a red lipstick :/ but that color is so pretty I kinda want that as well now. Rimmel had some nice red lipsticks as well but they looked pretty dark red so I thought once I’m used to the whole red ish orangey look I’ll try the Rimmel ones. My friend actually ended up buying the essence red lipstick and it really suited her! I bought the borjouis orange punch a week ago and loved it the minute i wore it but about two hours later the color was gone and my lips looked dry and the next day my lips looked super dry and dull, as if all the moisture was sucked out of it so I think i’m going to skip the whole lip stain thing..dont think it suits me. Just another question, do I need a red lipliner for red lipsticks or can i use my nude lipliner? Thanks for all the suggestions, especially wearing just a lipliner as a lipstick. Definitely trying out the essence lipliner too
