Jess Hart is an incredibly busy lady. Between modelling for Aussie fashion label Portmans, running her own beauty brand, LUMA Cosmetics, and strutting her stuff on multiple catwalks in multiple countries, her schedule is pretty jam-packed.

I got to catch up with Jess during her last whirlwind trip to Sydney, and managed to get her to spill her beauty secrets – including her must-have products, super-simple skin care routine, and pet hates.

JESS’ CAN’T-LIVE-WITHOUT PRODUCTS

After careful consideration, Jess revealed these to be her top beauty picks:

Paul Frank & Co Dust

“It’s a product you spray – not for the roots, and it’s not like a dry shampoo. It basically gives that texture I love.”

LUMA Cosmetics Nude Shimmer Lip Balm

“My lips are always dry.”

LUMA Cosmetics Tinted Moisturiser

“If I could only pick one, it would be the Tinted Moisturiser. It’s got SPF, evens out my skin tone and moisturises at the same time.”

THE SECRET BEHIND HER PERFECTLY STYLED BROWS

“I like a brow gel.”
Jess admitted that her brows tend to run awry, so she relies on a brow gel to style and keep them in place. She also uses one that’s tinted (usually an ashy brown) to give her brows extra oomph.

WHY SHE HATES CLEAN HAIR

It turns out clean hair isn’t everyone’s aspiration, with the blonde beauty revealing she actually hates it.
“I don’t like clean hair… I need it to be a little bit gritty,” she said. “I think I don’t like it clean cause it just hangs. When it’s a little dirty, I can get some texture and random kinks – like, it’s not straight, and it’s not curly.”

HER SUPER-SIMPLE SKIN CARE ROUTINE

Think Jess uses a gazillion products to get her skin looking so flawless? Nuh-uh. Think again. This is what she told me:

“I just take off my make-up, and then I use water to take off the make-up remover. And then once a week, I’ll do something in the shower that’s a bit more intense – a scrub or something like that. And then moisturiser, pretty much! At night, I just like to have clean skin to go to bed.”
She says a lot of creams and moisturisers don’t sit well on her skin, which is why she opts for the LUMA Cosmetics Tinted Moisturiser or simple SPF for the day.
Talk about fuss-free!

JESS’ TRICK FOR NOT LOOKING JET LAGGED (OR TIRED)

It’s not drinking a ton of water (more on that in a bit) or sleeping as soon as she lands, but instead the excellent use of a highlighter and concealer.

Jess said, “Illuminating highlighter helps, it really does. The [LUMA Cosmetics] concealer is also moisturising and it reflects light under the eyes, so I’ve noticed it helps if I’m tired or have dark circles.”

HER, UM, DISTASTE FOR WATER

Yep, Jess finds drinking water a chore. And believe it or not, it’s actually not uncommon for people to hate the taste. So how does the model ensure she gets the recommended eight glasses a day? She adds a bit of Ribena to her water bottle!
“I have it sent from Australia or the UK. I order boxes of it!”

DISCOVERING HIGHLIGHTER

“Highlighter was something that I said [to makeup artists], ‘Wow, what’s that? What are you doing with it?’ And now, if someone doesn’t put highlighter on my face, I’m like, ‘You’re missing something.’ Sometimes they say, ‘No, we’re not going for that look today’ and I’ll say, ‘We’re always going for that look!’”

HER EYE-OPENING TRICK

Jess uses the humble eyelash curler to open her peepers right up.
“Even if I don’t do mascara, and I just curl my lashes and add on a bit of highlighter, it makes my eyes pop. It’s a nice little trick to open your eyes.”

ON MOTIVATING HERSELF TO EXERCISE

“What motivates me is I know how sh*t I will feel if I don’t do it. That guilt is enough to get me up.”
“And I have to work out in the morning. I wake up, put on gym gear and work out. One, because if I know I’m going to the gym at the end of the day, it ruins my whole day thinking about it, and two, I don’t like the idea of getting ready and then getting back into gym clothes and then having to shower after the gym. Just get up and get it out of the way.”
So, what’s Jess’ advice for anyone struggling to find the motivation to exercise? “Do it first thing. Do not hesitate. And have your gym things by the bed.”

THE MAKE-UP LOOK THAT LED TO LUMA

Fun fact: Jess and Ashley Hart are the kind of sisters that can be completely honest with each other. When Ashley asked her sister why she didn’t put more effort into her make-up, Jess took her question to heart (uh, no pun intended), and started experimenting with a few products.

She explained: “I started wearing a tinted moisturiser, which I feel in love with. So I just put that on, curled my eyelashes, put on a bit of highlighter and was like,  ‘Wow!’ I started doing that all the time because it was easy and basic. And then people were asking me what I was wearing on my skin, because it wasn’t nothing but it also wasn’t make-up. My tinted moisturiser was discontinued, and I was like [to her remaining product], ‘I’m not letting you go until I recreate you!’ So that’s what I did and that’s when the line was born.”

THE LUMA PRODUCT SHE’S MOST PROUD OF

“I think it’d have to be the Illuminating Highlighter. There are so many [highlighters] out there and…  I couldn’t quite find the right one that gave that natural glow.  I found I would mix one with a bit of moisturiser to try and tone it down to get the right highlighter tone and amount of sheen.” She also revealed that it took a while to get the makers of the products to understand what she really wanted from her highlighter.
“I was coming to them with this idea for a product and I was saying, ‘It’s kinda like this, and kinda like that, and it’s not like this at all, and it can’t be too pink, and it can’t be too white, and it can’t have particles in it’. It took so long to get it right.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR LUMA

“Hopefully a brow gel – but it’s really hard to do natural.” Jess also shared that she’d love to launch new shades and colours of her existing products, as well as dabble in essential perfume oils and maybe even move into the skin care arena – for men, too!
“I would love to do men’s skin care. Actually, I want to do something unisex, like I would love to have a light moisturiser, and  few different skin care products that I could market to both men and women.”
