How to: nude, natural make-up

We caught up with make-up artist Max May to get the lowdown on Sara Phillips’ RAFW nude, natural make-up…

“Sara wanted me to create something new and different. She didn’t have a direct reference or look, all she knew was she wanted something young, fresh and clean with a cool, modern edge. Something that wasn’t too obvious but that would catch one’s eye.

The look we created is nude, but contoured, using peach to sculpt and highlight the face, creating a subtle yet interesting look.

It was really all about the skin. I wanted to create a flawless and radiant complexion so I prepped the skin with BECCA Silky Hydrating Primer. I love this product, even at the end of the week when all the girls’ skin is tired and stressed from the shows, it still manages to bring life back to the skin, giving the girls a great glow. I then used BECCA Stick Foundation which gives good coverage yet doesn’t leave the skin ashy or dry like most stick foundations.

On the eyes I used BECCA Bird of Paradise Gloss. This sheer, slightly reflective cream imparts a beautiful gleam to the lid, making the girls eyes pop and sparkle. To finish, we used BECCA The Ultimate Mascara in Bronze on the very base of the lash only as I wanted the eyes to have a soft and slightly out-of-focus look.

On the lips I used BECCA Nude Liner in Biscotti, finishing with a touch of BECCA Bird of Paradise Gloss to give the lip a subtle gleam making it appear fuller.”¨”¨The final and most important product of the look is the BECCA Crème Blush in Byzantine. I am obsessed with this product! It looks amazing on the cheeks and lips. Its texture and finish are magic – most creams have a glossy finish and move really fast, this does neither, and the colour is genius, it’s fresh and cool.

I applied it high along the cheekbones, in the centre of the chin, in a heart-shaped line across the forehead, close to the hairline, and finally, ever so slightly, on each side of the nose. This gave the girls a fresh peachy look and contoured their faces, creating a really interesting look.”
