How-to: Halloween make-up master class

Halloween is a chance for us to throw the make-up rules out the window and take on a different persona, with some creative make-up styles to match.

Whether you want to look beautiful or blood-curdling, there’s sure to be a make-up look that takes you away from your everyday look and straight into the swing of the scariest day of the year. Check out our ghoulishly glam favourites and get ready to get frightening this Halloween…

Very vampy

This sultry style was the star attraction at the AW11 Altuzarra show. MAC ‘s Tom Pecheux directed the make-up backstage and concentrated on making a smouldery stare and bloodstained lip top of the agenda. A true ode to glam-rock girls everywhere.

Perfect for dressing as: a vampire, a burlesque dancer or an evil witch.

How to get the look at home:

  • -Begin by covering your entire lid with a grey/steel shadow (MAC Lady Grey Eye Shadow was used here). Leaving out the inner corner of your eye, finely define your bottom lash line too. Build up the colour around the outer corner of your eye.
  • -Next, use a fine eyeshadow brush to apply a black shadow along both your top and bottom lash lines.
  • -For a really precise winged look, grab a ruler and position it at a slant from the outer corner of your eye to the top of your ear, then bring the shadow brush along the top of the ruler up towards your ear (about 4cm long). Smudge the colour up and out from the line, bringing it back in to meet the crease of your eye socket (so that it forms a winged look).
  • -Take a white shadow and apply it to the inner corner of your eye.
  • -For your lips, use a burgundy lip liner (MAC Beet Lip Pencil was used here) to trace the outline of your lips, then fill in completely with the liner.
  • -Next, take a matching lipstick (like MAC Diva Lipstick) and apply a coat over the lip liner.
  • -Brush some translucent powder over the top of your lipstick to keep it in place, and then finish with another layer of lipstick and blot off any excess.
