How-to: do winter lips really, really well

Do you know what I love more than anything? When a celebrity rocks a truly awesome make-up look. One that makes you think ‘Yes! Kristen Stewart must have read my recent winter make-up story – because all of a sudden she’s getting it so right!’ It’s enough to seriously inspire me to get cracking on unearthing a few more top beauty looks (stay tuned!).

Scarlett Johannson and Kate Hudson are two celebrities that really do deserve top marks. Not only for being strong, successful and inspirational women, but also for constantly resisting the urge to always play it safe in the beauty stakes – and for inspiring many young women (myself included) to take a leap of faith, try something new and feel fabulous and fearless for it.

Want to know how you can achieve both looks? No problem – all you have to do is decide if you want to go bright and shiny like Kate, or deep and moody like Scarlett…

DO IT BRIGHT AND SHINY LIKE KATE:

Kate’s super bright and cheerful pout matches her personality to a tee. If you want to copy it, there are a few things you should know…

–    Start by applying a lip stain to your lips and allow a few minutes for it to sink in and ‘stain’ your lips. Kiss the back of your hand to test whether the colour transfers to your skin, if it’s clear move on to step two. We love Max Factor Lipfinity Lip Tint in Berry Burst.
–    Next, apply a matching lipgloss over the top of your lips to ensure nourishment and a high shine finish. (We love Yves Saint Laurent Golden Gloss in Fuchsia.) The best part about this combo is that if the lipgloss fades away, you still have the subtle hue of the stain left on your lips.

Handy hint:
Light-to-medium lips go incredibly well with a grey or steel smoky eye, so feel free to get busy with a palette like Mirenesse Pearl Crush Creaseless Shadow in Keshi Pearls.

DO IT DEEP AND MOODY LIKE SCARLETT:

Scarlett opts to jump into this winter lip trend head first with a deep almost plum red that keeps the attention to her
kissers. Learn how you can recreate it at home…

–    When you’re dealing with a deep lip colour, it’s always best to take certain measures to ensure the colour won’t smudge or bleed over time. INNOXA Invisible Lip Shaper acts as a boundary for your lip colour and a shaper for your lips. Either line your lips in your preferred shape before applying lipstick to prevent it from smudging, or use it as a primer that your lipstick can cling to by applying it all over your lips.
–    Choose a strong and silky lip colour that you can apply to your lips in layers using a lip brush. Applying with a lip brush will ensure the colour is built up to your preferred intensity and will help to keep it in place for longer. We love Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Suede Lipstick in Backstage.

Handy hint:
Dark winter lips should always be the centre of attention. Scarlett knows this all too well, so she chose to keep her eyes a soft shimmery rose gold hue and evened out her complexion by using a bronzer to contour and define her cheekbones.
