Watch: a smoky eye look made easy

When I say ‘smoky eye’ do you think, “Yeah, cool, I can do that,” or are you more likely to respond with a scrunched face and, “Uhhh nah, way too hard.”

So many people find a smoky eye incredibly tricky to navigate (because let’s face it, more than one shade of eyeshadow is confusing), which is why we called on beautyheaven’s resident make-up artist to simplify the whole thing and break down each step for you.

Watch on as she takes you through what you need and how to create a seamless smoky eye. Or read the summary below.

Note: Smoky eyes aren’t limited to grey, charcoal and black shadows. It’s all about the blending of different shades of colours.

Bree used the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Les Ombres Eyeshadow Quads and a few shades of theColour Riche Mono Eyeshadows. The Quad could be used on its own to create your look, as it’s got all the shades you need, but Bree decided to mix it up with a few of her favourite Mono shades.

Prep your lids

Apply a light base colour all over your lids. This will help to prevent any grabbing later on.

Your inner corners

Use a light-reflecting shade at the inner corners of your eyes.

Apply a mid-range colour

Pick a shade slightly darker than your base shade and apply the colour to the centre of your eyelid.

Add some darkness

Take your darkest colour and apply it along your lash line and on the contour of your eye. Create a sideways ‘v’ at the outer corner – just be sure not to take it further than where your eyeliner ends.

Transition colour

Pick a shade somewhere between your light and dark shade to blend the colours and soften any harsh lines.

Highlight the brow bone

Use your light-reflecting shade to highlight the skin under your brow bone.

Blend it all together

Use a soft powder brush to blend the colours together for a seamless finish.
