Are you committing these crimes against foundation?
A while ago you all listened patiently as I went on a rant in the ‘Crimes Against Lipstick’ video. It really made me feel better and was satisfying… until now.
Yes, now I’ve found another make-up product that needs justice: Foundation.
It’s a product every girl has in her beauty bag and when used right can transform dull, uneven and imperfect skin into a flawless masterpiece. BUT, when used wrong, the results can be less than flattering. See what I mean in this crimes against foundation video above, or take tact from the tips found below.
Tip #1 Your skin changes colour year-round, so you should always test the shade of your foundation before purchasing. It’s normal for it to be slightly different in winter than summer.
Tip #2 When blending your foundation, make sure to go all the way down your neck and onto your chest (or as far as your skin is showing) to avoid any obvious lines.
Tip #3 Less is more! Start with a minimal amount of foundation and build it up until you reach your desired level of coverage. A cakey finish is not ideal.
Tip #4 If you apply your foundation hurriedly in the morning, don’t forget to do a quick check to make sure there’s no residue on your lips. It can cover their natural flush and make you look sick.
What are your best tips for flawless foundation? What’s the biggest make-up crime you can think of?

I am definitely guilty of using foundations that weren't quite my shade. I can't imagine blending my foundation all down my neck and decolletage though, it would get all over my clothes!

I’ve been using bb cream instead of foundation lately and I find it’s a lot more forgiving.

Good to know I'm mostly doing the right things, only thing I don't do is wet the sponge. I don't like to wear heavy makeup I like to look natural unless I'm going somewhere special then I will go all out. I hate caked on makeup on people they might as well just wear a mask as it looks as obvious as one. I find the brand and shade I like and stick to it.

I get a bit cakey around the hairline. It's so hard to blend!

Yeah me too, Chrystalage. It's a lot better having the right shade.

Best thing I did was to get professionally colour matched. The wrong shade is very unflattering

Okay, I'm going to make a slightly controversial comment here. I will put foundation on my lips, in particular my lip line, if I want to do a high impact lip. My natural lip line is quite dark and can detract from my lip liner and lipstick. I also have pigmentation marks on my upper lip (which makes me feel like I have a 'mo and really annoys me). So if I'm going all out, I really go all out. I find this approach helps my lip game to both pop and increases the longevity of certain lip looks I try to achieve. I don't do this if I'm going for something more natural but if I'm going for bright and powerful, you bet that foundation is going on, I will carve out my lip with some concealer, highlight my cupids bow and put a shadow under my bottom lip. That's just how I roll with high impact.

I was in the cosmetics department of one of the large department stores a couple of weeks ago and couldn't believe the makeup on the sales assistant. Not only was it so white (much lighter than her neck) but it was so caked on it looked as though her face would crack. Nice girl but such a scary look.

Ugh I hate when people have the caked on look!

Some good tips here :) I always use a fairly sheer foundation (you can still see my freckles :) ), and blend it well. I prefer to use my (scrupulously clean) fingers rather than a brush or a sponge, I think it wastes less product.

I have seen many makeup sales assistants wearing foundation that's very dark for them and/or very orange-y (I can see a strong demarcation line on their jaw). I wonder if they don't look in the mirror, or whether they're trying to create a tanned/bronzed look.

Its so incredibly frustrating when you go in a store and the foundations looks right, but when you get home its wrong. Most of the time the colour of their lighting changes the shades.

It's hard to find that right shade. I'm happy with the one i currently use but would love to try different brands but i usually buy the wrong shade, and foundation is costly.

So many people need to learn to not buy shades too dark for them!! It looks ridiculous when there is a clear difference between their neck and face skin tones!

Loving the tip of if you apply your foundation hurriedly in the morning, don’t forget to do a quick check to make sure there’s no residue on your lips. Just great!
