Check yo-self before you wreck yo-self, girl.
#1 Wearing the wrong shade
An orange face and a white neck do not look cute – no matter how flawless that base may be. When purchasing foundation, be sure to match the shade to your jawline or chest, rather than the back of your hand.
#2 Finishing your foundation at your chin
Foundation should not stop at the jawline or chin, but blend down the top of the neck for a natural finish. We recommend using the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge, as its rounded edge is perfect for use on large areas like the neck.
#3 Applying concealer before your foundation
Concealer should follow foundation. If you apply it before, the physical action of smoothing your foundation over your face will mess up any work you made with your concealer. Applying concealer after your base makes it much easier to blend and cover any imperfections or discolouration.
#4 Applying make-up to dry skin
Applying make-up to moisturised, well-primed skin makes for a much better finish. If your skin is dry, any flakiness will be accentuated and your make-up will sit on top of your face rather than blending in to the skin. Use Designer Brands Pre-Foundation Moisturising Primer to smooth the complexion before make-up application.
#5 Going crazy with blush
Blush should be used to create a barely-there, natural flush. Choose a shade that complements your natural blush tone, and dust off any excess powder before applying it to the apples of your cheeks.
#6 Doing your eyes last
There’s nothing more annoying than doing your entire face, then ruining it with a glob of mascara on your cheek. To avoid this happening, apply your mascara and eyeshadow before applying your powder and blush. If your mascara still flakes, try using a tubing mascara like the Sumita Tubing Mascara, which lengthens your lashes without any smudging or flaking.
#7 Over-exaggerating your brows
Bold brows do not suit everybody, especially those whose brows are naturally thin. Use your brow pencil to define your natural shape and fill in sparse areas rather than completely re-creating your brows. We like Bobbi Brown Brow Pencil as it is available in a range of shades to suit most complexions.
#8 Using too much glue on false lashes
False lashes are great for creating a doll-eyed effect. However, they’re not so great when you don’t know what you’re doing and end up with glue all over the lashes or (even worse!) your lids. Eylure Miss Eylure Lashets in Emily are pre-glued so the hard work is already done for you.
#9 Applying matte lipstick to dry lips
Applying matte lipstick to dry lips is a recipe for disaster (think visibly flaky bits). Before applying your favourite shade, ensure lips are aptly moisturised with a quick slick of ChapStick Lip Conditioner.
#10 Keeping the same products year-round
Chances are you are not the same colour in winter as you are in summer, and you should rotate foundation shades accordingly. Keep cream foundation and heavy powders for winter, and stick to lightweight BB creams and bronzer in the warmer months.
