Blogstar entry: onions have layers, so do we
Did you know that there are three main layers to our skin: the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis? Within the epidermis itself, there are more layers: the stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum granulosum… I better stop there before you start screaming or worse, think that I’m showing off!
When I first ventured into the world of beauty (which wasn’t too long ago!), I was overwhelmed with the amount of assumed knowledge that was required of you. So this is, dedicated to the beginners, a quick run-through of the base for you makeup. We’re going back to basics!
Just like how the skin has many layers, we need to put on a several basic layers of face makeup before we can even think about the eyes or lips! You should start your clean bare face with moisturiser to hydrate your cells. Keeping them “plump” is key to looking young. Next apply sunscreen, the higher the SPF the better. No thanks to UVA and UVB rays, your skin gets sun damaged when unprotected, causing some serious wrinkling and possibly skin cancer. If you’re one step ahead, you would have already purchased yourself a moisturiser with sun protection in it, cutting two steps down to one!
Moving on, allow me to introduce you to concealers! These creamy little goodies cover up any nasty scars and blemishes, making you look as flawless as a goddess. Apply on the dark patches under your eyes, it really brightens your eyes and hence your face up. Then finally comes the foundation. Our skin tone is naturally uneven and this rectifies that problem, giving you a good base to work the rest of your makeup off. Remember to choose a shade that’s as close to your natural skin colour as possible.
But wait! Before you run off with eyeshadows and lipsticks, there’s more. Don’t forget to pat or brush on (lightly if I must add) some powder. It sets and keeps the concealer and foundation intact. A quick mention for bronzers and highlights: they are optional. They help contour your face, giving it more dimensions. Lastly, apply and blend some primer onto your eyelids and lips before putting on eye and lip makeup for them to last for hours.
Are you the least bit scared? No? Good because you’ve just scraped the first few inches of soil on the land of beauty. Good luck!
