Have you ever wondered just when did it become mandatory to use primer before foundation? Or even, when preparing your face became a three-step process before you even get to the ‘fun stuff’?
Recently I visited the MAC counter without my blinkers and bridle on, and instead of confidently trotting straight to my MAC Studio Sculpt Foundation, my arms took on a life of their own and reached out for two new eye palettes (that I could really do without). This enabled the opportunity for the beautiful MAC sales girl to pounce on me! I was just after my no.30 Natural Beige when she said the words, “our primer just gives your foundation that perfect finish”. Dang it – I was gone, hook, line and sinker!
Unfortunately, she was right. It’s like preparing a canvas or. as my husband affectionately refers to it, ‘spack-filling’. Primer just gets your skin smooth and balanced so your foundation sets beautifully and maintains that just-applied look all day.
There are so many to choose from out there now, from pastes to lotions, matte or luminous. I have MAC’s Prep and Prime, which is a silky soft liquid with subtle sparkles, and L’Oreal’s Studio Secrets Professional Smoothing Resurfacing Primer, which is more like a little pot of matte paste. These are both wonderful and come up trumps in delivering what they promise.
The bad news is that yes, it is another ‘compulsory’ item to factor into our cosmetic budget, but you will wonder how you ever lived without it. Ok, so that may be a little melodramatic but honestly Beauties, it is a wonderful addition to our daily make-up regime.
The question is, are you satisfied with your foundation doing its job solo, or is it a crime not to prime?
