The top makeup trends to try for Spring 2018

Well, it’s official – Spring is finally here! And if you’ve been thinking about updating your makeup routine for the new season, look no further. We spoke to celebrity makeup artist and Priceline Pharmacy Makeup Director, Sarah Laidlaw, to find out which makeup trends you should be embracing for Spring 2018.

Which makeup trends are going to be huge this Spring?
High Shine Gloss – We told you that lip gloss wasn’t going anywhere. “Lips are glossy, but so much better than in its previous incarnation in the 90’s,” says Sarah. “The products are better, and the colours are beautiful. Lips are super shiny without being the sticky mess you remember.”
Under liner – What’s under liner? According to Sarah, think an eyeliner flipped on its head. “Instead of following the top lash line, it follows the outer half of the lower lash line and flicks upward.”
Cleopatra Eyes – “Take your winged liner and turn up the volume to a thicker, bolder and more dramatic width,” explains Sarah. We’ve seen many different takes on this look lately on the runways. “Some with sharp points, some with rounded fingerprint-esque ends, but all blackest-black and striking,” she says.
Yellow eyeshadow – Yellow is the new blue – and we couldn’t be happier. “It really was everywhere on the runways in a variety of intensities. We saw it as a bold wash of bright yellow on the lids, through to a subtler flash on the inner corners of the eyes,” says Sarah.
Draping – “Different shows used different colours, but the technique was the same… blush blended across the cheekbones and right up around the outer edge of the eye onto the temple and brow bone in a big arc of colour.”
Neons – If you didn’t already get the hint, now is not the time to shy away from colour. “Either on eyes or lips, bright neon colours were popping up all over,” says Sarah. “From lime green to neon orange and fuschia pink… a bold swipe of colour is trending on the runways.”
What are your favourite trends?
“A trend is always fun for a makeup artist! Having new looks come in and being able to interpret them for editorial shoots and on into more realistic street looks is inspiring,” says Sarah. So what are her top picks this season? “I love the yellow eyeshadow as it’s such a strong look. And for a more wearable trend, the high shine gloss is a favourite.”
And what is your least favourite trend?
“The under liner is fun on the runway or in a magazine, but it’s not super flattering to anyone… so even though it’s fun, it’s not my favourite this season,” says Sarah. You’ve been warned.
Which makeup do your clients ask you for the most?
According to Sarah, most of her clients just want makeup that compliments their own look, essentially them on their best day. “To be honest clients don’t often ask for trends… it’s usually in editorial fashion that trends happen,” she explains.
Are there any old trends that you see making a comeback?
“The classic looks that tend to stay around (with a slight tweak to how we do them) are always beautiful skin, a classic bright lip, winged liner and a smoky eye,” predicts Sarah.
What’s your advice for finding celebrities to follow for makeup inspiration?
Celebrities can be a fantastic source makeup inspiration, but Sarah has some great advice on who to follow. “If you’re looking at celebrities for makeup inspo, then make sure you look at someone who has similar colouring, face and eye shape to you,” she says. “There’s no use loving Charlize Theron’s makeup if you look like Cher.”
And how do you keep up with what’s #trending in the makeup world?
“I don’t really use Instagram for makeup trends as I find the high fashion magazines are my makeup/ fashion bible. I look more towards vogue.com, style.com and the Paris, Milan and New York runways,” says Sarah. “I also follow a lot of super creative independent magazines on Instagram for inspiration, but they’re as far from trend-following as you can be.”

I always have several lip glosses in my makeup stash. I don't see them as a trend.

Under liner just brings me back to my high school days when I thought it was okay to wear no makeup other than thick black eyeliner on my bottom lash line.

Loving draping becoming a trend, I love the yellow and pink/red looks. It is good that colour is being embraced again

Runway is always super exaggerated, so it'd be nice to show a toned down everyday version of it. That being said, I like the idea of draping bush past the apples of cheeks, but in a more diffuse, soft way that isn't so glaringly obvious.

eyeliner on lower lash line is probably the only thing that would suit me out of all of these. not sure about the yellow eyeshadow.

For the past few weeks I have been skipping bronzer and contour and have been draping with blush. I have very fair, cool-toned skin and it loks much more realistic and beautiful than the warmth of bronzer. I am not really down for the other trends. I think they should stick where they belong: the runway.

I like a thicker eyeliner but only when I have the time to get it perfect. Keen to try yellow eyeshadow.

Haha yes. Not allowed to wear eyeliner at my new job so I guess I will be saving time in this area.
