How to do eye makeup for hooded eyes

Ahh, hooded eyelids. For those of you aren’t sure, hooded eyes have extra skin that droops over the crease of the eye when the eye is open. Those who have them know how pesky they can be when it comes to applying makeup for hooded eyes. If you apply your makeup incorrectly, you’re usually left with eyes that look smaller and droopier than they actually are.

Take a look at these shots of Jennifer Lawrence.

On the left, her eyes look much less defined and even a bit puffy. On the right, her eyes look much wider and brighter and appear to have much more depth.

So if you have hooded eyelids and are looking to create flattering makeup for hooded eyes, here are some simple rules to follow:

#1: When lining your top lash line, make sure the line starts thin at the inner corner and gets thicker at the outer corner. Either sweep your line upwards or create a slight flick at the end of your eyes to help open up them up even more.

#2: Hooded lids can make you appear sleepy, so never line your water lines with a black pencil as this will just make your eyes look smaller, and therefore more tired. Instead, line both your upper and lower water lines with a white eyeliner to widen and brighten your eyes.

#3: Never apply only a dark or light shadow to your entire lid: the dark shadow will make your eyelids seem heavier and your eyes look smaller, while the light shadow may accentuate the hood. Instead, use a light highlighting shade on your brow bones and the inside corner of your eyelids, a mid-tone shade over the rest of your lids, and a darker shade on the outer corner of your eyes (just like J-Law in the picture on the right.)

#4: Curling your lashes can open your eyes right up. Once you’ve curled your lashes, apply two to three coats of mascara on your top lashes to help hide the hooded area of your lid. You can also add a few false lashes to the outer corners of your eyes to make your eyes look even wider.
