Concealer crash course

Coco Chanel once said “I don’t understand how a woman can leave the house without fixing herself up a little.”  And neither can we Coco, neither can we. That’s why us bh girls were thrilled to road-test that everyday essential: concealer. Here are our must-haves…

Bourjois Brush Concealer
“I’m not a big fan of concealers – probably because I’ve never really had the skill to apply it without it looking obvious. Or perhaps I’ve never found the right concealer for me. Nonetheless, the Bourjois concealer is super easy to apply (because of the brush application) and the formula is silky soft, making it easy to spread evenly over a pimple or blemish. It didn’t completely hide my pimple (maybe I needed to apply more – I’m a bit stingy) but it took away any redness so that it was barely noticeable. Most of all, I LOVE that this product can also be used to conceal dark circles and over eyelids for a smooth base. This is a must-have multi-tasker.” Rating: 4/5 – Leanne, bh Managing Editor

Max Factor Mastertouch Concealer
“It’s simply not possible for me to convey quite how much I love this product! I suffer from tired, black-ringed eyes but one glide of this and you would never guess. The twist always seems to provide the perfect amount of concealer and the padded applicator makes application a pleasure. It’s so soft, which is just what you need around such a delicate area like the eye. I know it’s mainly for eyes but I must admit, it also works a treat on pimple coverage too. An affordable handbag must-have.” Rating: 5/5 – Sarah, bh Editorial Assistant

L’Oreal Paris Touche Magique Concealer
“I nearly cried when, hungover with dark under the eyes, I clicked the bottom of my YSL Touche Eclat and not a drop of my favourite under-eye concealer appeared. With a week to go until payday and some serious circles to contend with, one of the bh girls suggested I try this L’Oreal concealer. In serious doubt that anything could live up to my Touch Eclat, especially at around a third of the price, I gave it a whirl and was really, really impressed. Okay, it’s not quite the same as whipping out the luxurious gold YSL packaging, but the end effect is comparable and in no time I was bright eyed! The consistency is really moisturising and illuminating, and it blends flawlessly. It even lasts the distance of a working day without settling into fine lines or wearing off. Love it!” Rating: 5/5 – Laina, bh National Advertising Manager

The Body Shop Concealer Pencil
“The Body Shop Concealer is in pencil form which I love as I find that liquid concealer often doesn’t stay put as long as it should and a pencil is so thick and sturdy. I like the fact that this concealer can be quickly drawn over a blemish and then rubbed in a little bit to create a mini-shield with massive staying power. Even though the shade is a little too dark for me, it’s still undetectable under my foundation and tinted moisturiser. There are no clay mountains on this face! Rating: 4/5 – Olivia, bh Office Assistant

Bloom Concealer
“This concealer is just as it says – super smooth! It glides onto the skin really easily and blends well so there are no tell-tale signs of a cover up. The best part is that it really does cover imperfections. It is perfect for dark circles and large red patches as once it is on, your skin looks flawless. I used it under my normal daily make-up but it also works on its own.” Rating: 5/5 – Claire, bd Editor

Benefit Erase Paste
“I find the deliciously creamy Benefit Erase Paste in No. 1 Fair best for banishing under-eye darkness in the morning. My secret is to apply it with a tiny brush after eye cream. It blends in a flash and lasts all day. Brilliant.” Rating: 5/5 – Alicia, bh Editor

Gorgeous Cosmetics Camouflage Cover Creme
“This concealer is ideal for covering up heavy-duty scars and blemishes. It is packaged as a liquid concealer, but has a creamy consistency. The thick formula means it is long-lasting – you can wear this all day and it won’t slide off! It is best mixed with an eye cream if you’re going to use it underneath the eyes, as it is too thick to be applied on its own. It is slim-line and small, so it is easy to carry and reapply if necessary. I would use this again, especially if any blemishes cropped up, as the coverage is so good and it’s easy to apply. Just dab on and go!” Rating: 4/5 – Kate, bh Photographer
