How to shape your brows for your face shape

Our brows are often referred to as ‘face framers’, so it only makes sense to consider your face shape when grooming them. Especially if you have no idea where to start when it comes to using a brow pencil, gel or pomade.

So to make it that little bit easier, here are some guidelines to help you master the brow shape most flattering for your face shape.

Brow tips for OVAL-shaped faces

Oval is typically the most well-proportioned face shape and therefore suits a classic, well-balanced brow. “For those with an oval face shape, the key is to create a soft angled eyebrow with a moderate arch,” says brow expert and founder of iBoutique, Bree Cowen. “To do so, extend the end of the brow out horizontally, rather than striking downward.”

If your brows are a little short, rest a pencil on the outer corner of your nose, angling toward the outer corner of your eye. Where the tip of your pencil rests on your browbone is where the end of your brow should be.

Brow tips for OBLONG-shaped faces

This may surprise you, but oblong faces are actually really common. If the lower half of your face (from the middle part of your nose downwards) is longer than the top half, it’s likely that you fall into this category.

When shaping your brows, Bree says “a flat shape, focusing on its horizontal line will help shorten the appearance of your longer face.”

Leave the tip of your brow angled to help give them shape despite having a more straight-edged arch.

Brow tips for ROUND-shaped faces

A round face is almost as wide as it is long, so steer clear of rounded edges in your shape and style your brows into sharp, precise angles to elongate the face.

“Focus on vertical counterpoints to draw the viewer’s eyes up and down,” says Bree. “This will also help to lengthen your face shape.” The end result will look something like the top of a triangle.

And don’t worry, even though the shape may seem quite angular, filling your brows in with a powder, or running a spoolie through them after applying pencil will help to give them a softer appearance.

Brow tips for SQUARE-shaped faces

If your forehead, cheekbones and jawline are all a similar width, these are usually the characteristics of a square face shape. Bree says, “It’s crucial [for those with square face shapes] to create a statement brow to soften and balance out the distinctiveness of [the] jawline.”

Bree says in order to make your brow appear stronger, use a styling product of your choice to define a sharp peak at the top of the brow. The stronger your jawline is, the sharper you can make the angle of your brow and the peak. If you’re lacking in the brow hair department, try using a growth product like Soshan Brow Boost.

Brow tips for HEART-shaped faces

Heart-shaped faces can be tricky to determine, but usually it means your forehead is a prominent feature, your chin may be slightly pointy, and your face is strongly tapered towards your chin.

“To achieve the best brows with this shape, you want to soften and balance out these prominent features,” says Brooke. “Create a low, slightly straight arch with a dash of volume to hug your browbone.”

Brow tips for DIAMOND-shaped faces

Diamond-shaped faces are typically angled at every facial feature (forehead, jaw and cheekbones), so the goal when defining and shaping your brows is to soften them and lessen the width of your face.

“You’ll want to create curve-shaped brows,” explains Brooke. “Doing this will soften and reduce the widest features of your face.” The beginning of your brow to your arch will angle upwards and then curve towards the outside of your eye. It’s not uncommon for this type of brow style to be longer before the arch and shorter at the tail.

  1. This is a great guide! Thank you, BH. This is one of the issues I faced when I started out doing my own makeup. I’ve gain inspiration from celebs and even Instagram makeup artist. After several trials and errors, I was able to get the best brows for my face shape. Luxondemand has some interesting articles too. I would definitely recommend BH to my friends and peers.
