9 things you didn’t know about fake lashes

Did you know that false eyelashes weren’t the brainchild of a beauty brand? Or that Madonna once wore fake eyelashes made from mink and diamonds? Pretty fun things to know about one of the most glamorous beauty products, right?

Right. So here are nine bits of trivia about false eyelashes that are bound to leave you in shock and awe.

FAKE EYELASHES WERE KIND OF INVENTED BY A MOVIE DIRECTOR

True story. In 1916, movie director D.W. Griffith wanted his leading lady, Seena Owen, to have “eyelashes long enough to brush her cheeks,” when she blinked. And he made it happen.

BUT THERE HAVE BEEN OTHER TALES OF THEIR CREATION

Like the story of Mrs Pomery, a lady who ran a beauty establishment in Bond Street, London, before the twentieth century. It’s been said she removed hairs from her clients’ heads and sewed them onto their eyelids.

FALSE EYELASHES WERE MADE MAINSTREAM BY MAX FACTOR

Makeup legend Max Factor gifted actress Phyllis Haver with a set of false lashes, which sparked a lot of public interest in them. How’d he do it? By sewing real hair onto her own lashes.

THEY WERE FIRST A FRINGE

Word is that the first set of false eyelashes was made from a fringe carefully attached to a thread, which was then glued onto the eyelid. Interesting.

THEY’RE NOT ALWAYS MADE OF HAIR

An artist named Jessica Harrison actually took dead flies’ legs and attached them onto eyes. She even has a name for her groundbreaking technique: ‘flylashes’. Um, ew.

TWIGGY BASICALLY SPARKED THE TREND

Lash hysteria died down a bit after the 30s and 40s, but in the 60s, when English supermodel Twiggy painted on lower lashes and a full top set – her iconic look –women went wild for false lashes again.

BEAUTY BRAND ARDELL HAS BEEN IN THE LASH GAME FOREVER

Arnold Miller founded Ardell with his wife Sydell back in 1971 with a mission to give women the tools for unforgettable eyes. Together they launched Ardell Duralashes (the individual faux lashes), which are still around today.
Bonus fact: the name Ardell is combination of Arnold and Sydell’s names. Awww!

JLO MADE LUXE LASHES A THING

Back in 2001, Jennifer Lopez sported a pair of red fox fur lashes made by Shu Uemura to the Academy Awards. While it did cause quite a stir (because of the use of fur and the sheer extravagance of it all), it also got people talking about luxe lashes. So much so that Shu Uemura opened Tokyo Lash Bar in 2004, a high-end counter with seasonal lash collections.

AND MADONNA WORE A PAIR WORTH $10,000

Shu Uemura created a custom pair of fake eyelashes for the queen of pop that retailed for about $10,000. Why so expensive? The mink false lashes were encrusted with 0.75 carats of diamonds. While you might think that’s a ridiculous amount of money to spend on lashes, you might find it even more ridiculous that they sold out!

And now that you’re all brushed up on your fake lash trivia, it’s time to try a pair! Here are our some of our favourites:
